It will depend on the offset of the wheel.

It depends on the offset...
I've 255/40x17" on 9's on mine with rolled arches and super hard suspension. ET41 if I remember rightly.

Rolled arches and ET41? I Got ET35 with 255/40 and 9" wheels,, And I don't have rolled arches
Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Rear Alloy Fit
So would 9jj with ofset of 35 be ok on the rear??

Yes mate ... Thats virtually flush.
The key is to go with a 40 profile.. If you go with a 45 you may/could get rubbing.

It'll look great but if you haven't rolled your rear arches then you will very likely experience some rubbing when you go over bumps with a wider tyre like a 255/40/17 when riding on the stock rev 3 suspension.
With a narrower tyre like a 235/40/17 or 245/40/17 you could maybe get away without rolling up your inner arch lips but you'll only know for sure when you try it out.
On my car a 255/40/17 Hankook Icebear tyre on 17x9" and +41 offset (same as KM's wheel size above) went on ok without needing any rolling on my car. However when I put a 3mm spacer on to make it a +38 offset I started getting the tyre rubbing on the rear arch when going over on larger bumps. That is with stock rev 3 springs.
So if you want to put a wider tyre like a 255/40/17 but don't want to roll your arches then stick to offsets of around +38 and above. If you're happy to roll your arches then there shouldn't be any problems running 255/40/17 on 9" rim with +35 offset

Sorry, the arch was rolled because of previous wheels. The Rotas in my sig. I just mentioned it as that is what is there and didn't want to say 'I have z-y-z and have no problems' if you get what I mean..
