As above has anyone done one for the mk1?

I had a massive clonk when I went to pull away on my lunch earlier. Gears go in easily but I wont move anywhere!

I had to become a member of the AA before I could be towed away so that was very expensive

So if anyone has a step by step picture guide id be very grateful, as i'll be removing this in my garage un aided until the 'box is ready to come out!

This is a great guide to replacing the gearbox so use this but then change clutch whilst box off.... I did a clutch replacement on my drive way with a jack and an axle stand.....

I got an Aisin one for £70, was the same as the one i removed.

The hardest part of a clutch change is getting the gearbox back on.

I know it doesnt list the mr2 at all, but the splines are the same, diameter of clutch is the same or am i clutching at straws trying to find a cheap one?

depends of its the original engine or not if it is then just go with the correct size for year if not its a wait and see once its off job

The type of clutch will also depend on the block and flywheel in the car.

You can use different flywheels and clutches on the different blocks (1a/1b etc...) as far as I am aware.

I doubt very much that a clutch kit for a more modern car will be suitable.

The cover plate will have notches & holes in it to line up with on the flywheel. It is advisable to renew the coverplate and release baring at the same time as the clutch. Just because it's a pig of a job and if either fail shortly after puting a new clutch in, you will be really, really, really upset due to the PITA the job is.

Getting the gearbox back on even with 2 or 3 people and an engine crane is a right PITA. Good luck

IIRC, from a converstion with a Toyota parts bod years ago, the Yaris uses the same clutch as the Mk1.

If I can find a Yaris chassis No. I'll check.

its okay ive just bought one from ebay for £80 inc postage

ive got the late mk1b, 212mm clutch.

Its all good. car has been transported home now. going to rip the box off tomorrow night and hopefully find a mangled thrust bearing/pressure plate inside and itll be fixed by the weekend if im lucky - although im facing redundancy this week, so im not so lucky.

You'll most prob find what looks like a birds nest in there, i had a clutch go completly on my Nova TD and there was no material left at all on the clutch. Smells bad too.

its strange the clutch wasnt slipping before hand, there was just a massive clonk at the traffic lights and i couldnt go backward or forward. All the gears selected and the clutch peddle remained the same. must be the pressure plate or the thrust bearing.

Its the clutch plate, there wont be any material left on it. Everything sounds like its working fine, you can change gears, clutch is still smooth.

If the pressure plate of bearing went you would feel a change in the pedal, it wouldnt work smoothly.

Its what happened to my nova.

Just an update I havent received my clutch yet or dropped the box off. I stupidly undid a load of bolts which i thought were the bell housing bolts. These were in fact the fifth gear casing. I wasnt at home last night, just got under the car to find a nice puddle of g'box oil
