Hi
New to the forum and I joined in the hope of getting advice, I am at the end of my rope with my early 1992 MR2 which I love but feel like sending it to the knackers yard. It has recently well the past 4 or 5 weeks strarted making clunking and banging noises from the front but it has in the past 2 weeks got really bad it is banging, rattling, squeaking I cant really explain as it seems to be more than one noise, my dad lookeed at it and cant see what it is but on the other hand he is a know it all and knows nothing at all. The biggest worry is that it sailed through its mot 3 weeks ago and it was making noises then but they were intermittent now they are constant. PLEASE PLEASE HELP as I cant afford to change every part on the car in the hope of getting it right also I got the mechanic who mot'd it to look at it twice in the past 6 weeks due to the noises.

Re: Car sounds like it is falling apart
Hi there fella. Firstly welcome to the site, I hope you'll find it informative, amusing, money saving and useful. There are some very helpful people here.
Regarding the car think of it in context. It has noises from the suspension?...but it passed it's MOT? So that's not too bad already for an almost 18yr old car. As you know noises might be almost anything since most suspension parts undergo forces and move... that's their job. Look at the most likely culprits first as has been suggested... or get in touch with a specialist who can hopefully accurately diagnose for as little as say £30 for an hours time.
That's what I'd do. After I'd checked what I could of course... spare screwed in securely, nothing in the frunk to bang about, each wheel up at a time to see if anything can be heard moving the wheel, that sort of stuff.
Anyway I hope you get it sorted, in the scheme of things it's really just expected wear and tear (unless the suspension has alread been refreshed?).
Hope that helps... in the meantime tell us about the car.

I had your problems too mate. The squeaks could be from the trims which are basically loose after all these years. Not really sure how to fix that but you could replace broken clips to see if that helps.
I had the strange knocking noise apparently from the front too. I replaced my ARBs and the noise is still there. I had it checked and there's no problems with my drop links or bushes. I suspect its something from the dash trim.
However, if its to do with suspension, I would check the ARBs, the drop links, the bushes and the suspension (in that order).
Cheers
Thanks to all the replies and I will see about those drop link things
I dont know where here I can tell you about the car or as I like to call it the White Stallion so I will look for the right place and mayber put a pick of him on

Re: Car sounds like it is falling apart
I've been thinking about doing repairs for mk1 mk2 mr2 in manchester for a while now as a little side business at the weekends while i save for a deposit.
You'd be looking at about £15 an hour. Drop links and ball joints for front would take about 2 hours as long as they aren't made of rust. I'm also offering a watch and wait service for extra peace of mind.
I don't know how much a garage would charge but you should find out. I'd be interested to know.

Re: Car sounds like it is falling apart
if your going to check the suspension parts i would jack the whole end of the car rather than just a corner at a time.
if you jack just the driverside front for instance you will put load on the anti-sway bar and wont be able to find any rattles, if you jack the whole front you have no load on the sway bar and might find droplinks or bushes to be at fault.....a lesson i learnt doing what your doing now

Re: Car sounds like it is falling apart
i recall reading pots about knocking noises coming from the steering column.
but the diagnosis will still be the same: get in there and test everything for play with a sturdy lever.
white stallion eh?... I call mine noisy clunking b@stard
