Don't worry it's getting new ones when i get round to the bodywork.

Yes i'm going to redo the engine subframe, using 2" diam 4mm thick tube bent to shape with platforms and gussets welded on at the engine mounts and chassis plates. The gearbox subframe just needs some gussets adding.... i jacked the whole car up on the gearbox subframe and it never budged, which is way more weight/load than it will ever experience.

It's a styleauto rear bumper with the centre slats removed, i have the moulds for these and can supply them.

Made some good progress today on the structural firewall welding, i got most of it boxed in and ready for seam sealing which will tidy up some of my pinholes, welding thick steel to thin stuff is a right pain! Also i routed the fuel filler hose which needs to go in the cabin side due to space issues....

Image

The day ended with part of the unboltable lid made and bolted down, the face of the wall will be unboltable too and that small section missing from the right hand side top will be a hinged flap so that i can top oil up easily without having to unbolt anything...

Image

So apart from needing to tidy up the welded seams on the wall and seam seal it all before painting i am pretty happy with this.

Also fitted my TD replica lid which will have some spals fitted under it, need to do everything i can on this car to keep the bay cool....

Nearly completed work on the front firewall now, just needs some paint and a flap for oil filler access and it is done. All of this will be soundproofed and carpeted, hopefully keep the noise levels down!

Here is the redone engine crossmember, i took advice from some of you chaps and redid it in tubular steel bent to shape with strengtheners added at the ends.... this is much better i think.

Image

And here it is fitted....

Image

The gearbox is now out to carry out work on the rear crossmember, i am making the mk1 triangles into a mk2 style subframe to get some strength back into this area...

Image

This is just the triangles welded together with the first of many pieces that will be added.

Cheers tiny, just noticed this thread has more hits than any other in the mk1 section including the stickies, seems people are enjoying the build anyway!

This is the only reason I would have a MK1.
