Starter mounting '88 Mk1b

Hey Guys,

I've been told since early in my conversion that I could swap the starter over to the other side of the engine with no work other than cutting out the dirt plate and firtling the wiring.

This isn't the case, the mounting holes on the "rear" of the box don't line up.

Is there another starter available which will fit? Otherwise i'll have to build up a web structure for a new bolt hole, and it's going to be really difficult to get the teeth to mesh reliably.

"1983 Austin Mini" only tells half the story. In fact, the only bits of Mini I have left is the front subframe arrangement and rear brakes

Anyways, i'm told the AE92 starter arrangement is same as AW11???? though there's a possibility the 3s-ge one might work.

I've got the club4ag boys on the case....

Hmm, it may be a supercharger AE92 starter motor that you need then. That is what my 4agte conversion uses, and this mounts on the other side as i needed the extra space on the exhaust side to mount the turbo.

I had always assumed that the NA AE92 was the same.

And I've had a good look at the existing starter, and it's a complete no-go without chopping large chunks of the gearbox casing out.

D'oh.

I'll check out our local "Ex private hire" scrappers at the weekend to see if owt else will fit.

I'm pretty certain the 20V GE had the starter on the other side, so that should fit - from a quick search on the EPC I think the part no. is 9106-28100 ( from an AE-101 20V Corolla Levin )

So, if i'm reading that right, the starter from a Corolla with a 5AFE engine should fit!

It's not the 5AFE, it's the 4AFE from the Corolla and Carina E.

I'll know more after a root around at the scrappers on Saturday.

Yep you need a corrolla one, I swapped my starter position when I fitted my AE92 GZE engine to the MR2. Mainly because the GZE engine came with the inlet-side starter so I decided to relocate it to the inlet side on the MR2. The AE92 starter is a mirror image of the MR2 starter, its not just a case of turning it upside down on the opposite side of the engine. You should also weld a plate over the old starter hole to keep things out of the bellhousing.

Yep check the part numbers for an JDM AE92 GZE starter and see if it cross references to anything but in "theory" and inlet-side starter from a C5x series box should fit.

Interestingly the AE92 GZE starter on my engine was from an E51/E58 box with the bigger clutch diameter and the AE92 flywheel. But it still fitted the MR2 flywheel and C52 box as the ring gear diameter is the same (the AE92 GZE E51/E58 flywheel is just deeper and won't fit in the C52 box)

To confirm then, 4afe engined 1993 Carina starter fits in the hole - i've not spun it over yet as there's no oil in the engine, but it's looking promising.
