[Mk2] [Generic] matt black painting of body panels

Post by cantfindausername »

I've got a spare bonnet that I'm considering doing in matt black. I've heard various ways of getting a good matt black finish. Is it going to be best to sand the bonnet back? What matt black paint would be good to use?

Any tips or advice would be appreciated.

i would just say flatten the existing paint and paint over the top should be ok :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:
she's all comming together nicely now after a fair bit of cash spent, not bad for just an n/a now for some body kit i think.

would normal halford "matt black in a can" spray paint be ok? Guessing there is no need for a "professional" finish with these things

yes mate should be fine as dont need a shine, paint just has to have something to grip to hence flattening existing paint so it sticks to it.

i like halfords rattle cans thay dont block up and paint is nice always used them bit expensive but i suppose you pay for quality. :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

A quick Scotch Pading should be fine to paint to mate.

I really rate the Halfords Paint Prep wipes, they seem to get all the sanding debris off with no fuss, and the solvent dries off in seconds giving you a good surface to paint to :thumleft:

And +1 for the pre-mixed Halfords cans :thumleft:

Yep, a quick rub down with scotchbrite will do the job. We're switching to matt black + a bright colour on our race cars as it's much easier to maintain!

I've got a spare red bonnet here i was thinking of doing black as both that one and the one on the car are too faded to bring up..

i was thinking gloss black on mine? but didnt know if this would be a little 'fake' carbon fibre look! Matt sounds good though!

Matt blacking the bonnet was used as a functional way of reducing glare in the old days of racing. Same was as flocking a dash.

Shampoo wash then rinse with fresh water, towel or chammy off. Thats it. \:D/ No polishing needed just make sure you get all the water off or it will leave shadows on the paint. :thumleft:

My whole car is painted Matt/ Satin black and I love it. The other thing is if you get any scratches, stone chips or bumper scrapes you just rub it down a bit then spray it again, the paint blends straight in.

i do love matt black cars, i saw a matt black mk2 escort in max power (how embarrasing) once, standard bodywork and it looked very cool!

Hopefully going to paint my spare bonnet matt/satin black next week...

i agree ,matt black is very cool BUT you have to do it properly ,by that i mean removing trim and not having masking edges and overspray on show .like the look though keep it clean and it looks brill :thumleft:

If i was to do the whole car I would strip it completely, red door shuts just wouldn't do it for me.

Agreed, mine is done properly - doorshuts n' all. Though the car was black to start with. :thumleft:

The only thing I find a PITA is when you get 'dirty rain' it dries to look like leopard spots. Probably happened when the car was gloss too but I didn't notice it as much. :-k

The grit that falls in the rain dont seem to be able to ingrain itself into the Matt/ Satin paint though so it only ever needs a quick warm rinse. :thumleft:

Oh one other thing.....you can use chalk to draw/write all sorts of weird and wonderful things on the paint, just dont go letting the local kids know. :-$

(Not that I've done such things, I saw it on a couple of cars at JAE and it was quite amusing  )

How much would you expect a body shop to charge for this?

I've seen a matt black car and it looks very nice, but it was matt vinyl wrap and not paint :silent:

Also quite fancy drawing on my car and just washing it off for a new day :thumleft:

Done by a bodyshop ? Probably the same as a normal gloss coat. They will still need to prep/mask the car in the same way after all. :-k

I did mine myself :thumleft: and yes I've seen a Rex covered in black vinyl, while it looked good I'd be a bit worried about water getting underneath and spoiling it. :(

You dont have to limit yourself to black either, there's loads of colours made in satin and matt paint, even pearls/ mett's etc ... 8)

Will see if I can find the link... :-k

Edit...Love having a schmooze on here =P~ American company who do some fantastic colours (scroll down).
