[Mk2] [Turbo] Time for new discs & pads. Upgrade or OEM?

Post by Dean_82 »

Will be needing some discs & pads soonish. What are peoples opinions of ebay discs i.e - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TOYOTA-MR2-1992-2 ... 240%3A1318

Or am I better of with OEM?

Also what about pads?

Thanks.

std discs seem to be the norm, drilled discs have a habit of cracking usually when you need them the most

Stock ones would be my suggestion, a better pad would be fine, it depends how you like your brakes to feel.

Greenstuffs and stock discs are my favourite.

I have these with red stuff pads front and rear. Very good but with grooved discs pad wear is increased.

I'll second that. Just fitted these to front and rear of my 2 with Green Stuff on the front and I gotta say, the braking is incredible. Greatly improved!

You want the car to stop as best as poss at the end of the day so pad wear is worth it to maybe save your life or some elses one day....

Same thing I was told, so I went for 'dimpled' as opposed to drilled. The ebay link is cheap but i'd rather go for oem over them tbh

Good to hear as I bought this package and the car's just gone in the garage to have them fitted along with 4 reconditioned calipers.

Can't wait to see how good the brakes are going to be :D For an extra £25 you can get all 4 CRN discs zinc plated in a gold or silver finish. I went with the gold and they arrived looking like the ones in the picture. The recon calipers from Camskill were also zinc plated in a gold finish. Coupled with my bronze alloys I think my brakes will look well tidy, at least for a little while 8)

Back on topic, avoid drilled discs as they always crack. A m8 of mine has had BMW M5's, Porches and is currently driving a Lambo. All of these cars have had factory fitted drilled discs and they've all cracked. Says it all really.

Personally i'll be upgrading....hopefully to a big brake set up (supra possibly) cos personally i think the MR2 turbo brakes are pretty horse in standard form!

Maybe you have some bad components then, cos on mine the std set up was one of the best i've come across.

I only up graded because i'm doing more track driving and that was taking it's toll on the std bits.

dont believe that all drilled discs will crack mate as they wont. Ive had drilled on the front of mine for over a year and have not cracked yet. Just dont brake all the time like a Freakin' Nutter and im sure youll be fine.

Standard discs / Carbotech pads all round. Serious stopping power. My recommendation.

If you can get some braided brakelines and have full fluids changed while doing that much work. Braided hoses you can get off ebay for about 50 quid.

I think as long as your not tracking the car then standard discs and uprated pads are fine. I looked a a few places and camskill were by far the cheapest. Front discs where about £65 (pair) and you could get either ebc green stuff or red stuff for about £55.

I hear very good things about carbotechs but at about £140 just for the pads it seemed a lot for the average driver and avergae braking.
