Why should i buy a rev3 rather than a rev1 or 2?

Post by symonpll »

im looking to buy a turbo quite soon and im sure ive read somewhere that there is a massive difference between the air intake system between rev1, 2 and 3.

with the rev3 being the more reliable, i hope this any sense.

Rev1+2 use a AFM Rev3+ uses a MAP sensor.... :-k
Not a lot of difference air intake wise than that.......other stuff tho like different turbo, suspension etc etc etc....lots about this if you search around :thumleft:

I just stepped up to a rev3 from a rev2 and the difference is amazin g remember rev3 has better cams too! Get a rev3 or you will regret it, theyre easier to tune as well

differences between rev2 and rev3 turbo

- MAP sensor instead of AFM
- Bosch D-Jetronic (Gen III) vs. L-Jetronic (relatively primitive) engine management
- CT20b turbo replaces CT26
- Boost raised from 10psi to 13psi
- Fuel cut raised from 12 psi to 18 psi
- Different ECU
- 4 wire O2 sensor
- Shim under bucket valve shims
- slightly more aggressive cams
- Revised internals (pistons, con-rods etc.)
- Revised cylinder head cooling passages/water jackets
- Revised intake manifold (8 'independent long ports' reduced to 4)
- intake manifold inlet air temperature sensor added. i.e. after turbo and intercooler.
- Revised gearbox with close ratio gearing
- lower compression ratio
- stainless steel head gasket
- factory 540cc injectors replace 430cc injectors
- revised fuel rail with bigger bore and relocated pressure regulator
- TVIS eliminated
- EGR eliminated
- LSD in 80% of them
- throttle body increased from 55mm to 60mm
- inlet valve lift increased from 8.2 to 8.7
- intake manifold inlet air temperature sensor added
- Less restrictive exhaust elbow
- Aluminum oil pan
- more rigid alloy sump and additional oil baffles
- Factory Catch can
- Better Oil Cooler and relocated oil filter (bottom)
- 4 Channel ABS coupled with Traction Control available
- No. 1 compression ring described as 'stainless steel' instead of just 'steel'. Oil ring is described as 'stainless steel' instead of 'a combination of steel and stainless steel'.

With prices so low, you'd be bonkers not to get a rev3, unless you really are on a low budget.

compared to rev1/2, Rev3 has:

bigger turbo
lower compression ratio
higher stock boost (13psi vs 10psi)
bigger fuel injectors (cope easily with 18psi)
different cams and head design (better top end flow)
steel head gasket (good for 18psi, unlike rev1/2)
MAP sensor instead of restrictive AFM

Dan you beat me to it, damn you
And in much more detail too :thumleft:

Not sure about the gearbox, though. I don't the gear ratios changed and I thought ALL rev3s had the viscous LSD that was only an option on rev2s.

the way the prices are now I would just get a Rev3+

Personally I dont think theres anything wrong with the Rev2's, I have a Rev2 Turbo engine in mine and theres more than enough power. I went for mine mainly because I liked the look of it, the Rev2 engine didnt put me off. Loads of the high powered 2's started life as Rev1/2's

My next 2 if I get one will be a Rev3+ most likely a Rev4 or 5

Best best of REV3 are the much better ct20b turbo, and map sensor (AFMs suck balls).

Only main differences you need to be concerned about are a better turbo that'll run more boost, better ecu and better cams.

That's about all you'll notice performance wise.

Bare in mind that YouTube vid is of a rev1 gt Vs rev3gts
I have seen another jap vid of a rev1 gt Vs rev2 gts, and the rev1 made the same 14.2sec time HOWEVER the rev2 gts pulled out a 13.7!!!!!

So not much in it from a rev2 and rev3 going by those times!

I'd get which ever one you like the look of thats in good nick and gives you VFM. I went for my rev 2 as it came with a decent kit, wheels, coilovers, exhaust, all stuff that costs a canny penny to buy and paint and fit. Running a decat+exhaust+airfilter and standard boost is now 11psi Im quite pleased with the cars power and it holds the 11 psi right upto the redline.

Yeah get a rev3or newer the performance advantage is really worth the extra (which in the grand scheme of running a turbo sports car is a very small amount more to pay).

£3.5 will bag you a very nice car. I paid £3700 a year ago for a very, very tidy rev3.
