[Mk2] [NA] New exhaust, which one? and where to buy?

Post by riskyburden »

Hi all,

I've just had the fun and games of MOT failure :( because my Cat had a hole in it. So I took it to Kwik fit because they'll have a look for free, they told me the downpipe was on the way out and the pipe from the backbox to the cat was thin then quoted me £750 fitted. OK I'd put a little cash back for the MOT but not that much. Anyway I got my local garage to weld her up and through it went, but I know I need a new exhaust. I've had a ring round and another garage in my area quoted me £390 for the back box and Cat (not sure if I've only got a quote for a new cat, some youth on the phone). The question is, are there any particular exhaust suppliers you could recommend as the parts on there own from find a part and japtec came to more than £800 and the local garage who I would rather spend my money with said he'd fit it for cheap. Its for a Rev 3 3SGE

Cheers

You can probably get rid of the cat even for MOT's. I know you can on the turbo. Up to 1995.
As for exhaust, blueflame on an N/A sound good.
Do a search, you will find loads.
Apexi Induction, Gutted Cat, Departure Exhaust, Magnecor Leads, St205 cc, Blitz ebc.
Carbotech pads.

Its an import g limited but i think because they sold the na in the uk at the same time it will come under the same emissions as that, unlike the turbo that wasn't sold in this country only the us and japan. I could be completely wrong.

Defo go for Blueflame m8 I got mine from ROGUE £250 :thumleft: (not sure if they have gone up)but if your going for a front pipe as well I would go to MR T I,m sure it was about £170 and you will get the right one first time.I tried to get one cheaper of the net £120(forgot where)and it cost me more in returns (£25 a shot) ](*,) as they sent me 3 different ones and none of them fitted.

i could be wrong here but im sure if your car is pre 92. and is an import that doesnt have a uk equivalent then its tested on the non cat test. do a search its been discust before. so as your car does have a uk equivalent then i think it will need the cat.

If you want to keep it cheap and just need to get through the MOT at the moment, I'd consider 2nd hand if I were you.

www.tcbparts.co.uk are bound to have something in stock and all their parts are A1. There will be other breakers who could help, but I've had experience of these guys and they're very quick to deliver.

Squidge, do you still have a cat? if not was it a b1tch to get through the MOT? I've just had a look at buypartsby.co.uk and the uk cat is £87.57 but the one for my import is £217

i have a cat and it was a b1tch to get through mot, i had to change my plugs and leads, run fuel treatment through, clean air filter and get it ridiculously hot until it scrapped through on emissions :S

Hi Risky,

for the prices your looking at you could get the ebay manifold/downpipe (and hope it fits) and a new aftermarket backbox and still save some cash.

Couple more options for you

Remus

Magnex (I think)

Also Mongoose available and quad systems (very loud)

I got the Jap speed back box, its awsome but its around £300 mark plus its quite loud.
As for the down pipe, I had to replace mine last year and I got one from Fleebay, it was a full stainless one, but cant remember the company name sorry, will look through paperwork.

Will take some pics of mine later today for you to see.. :D
