[Mk2] [Turbo] Gearbox oil change

Post by dawolf »

Does anyone know how much work is involved in changing the gearbox oil? My local garage said they think it will cost around £40 all in. Is that about right?

Thanks.

sounds pretty good, just make sure they use decent/right grade oil.
:thumleft:
not a hard job, and can cost up to £30 or more just for the oil.

It cost £45 to fill up my gearbox with Redline MT90 :thumleft:

make sure they don't whack mineral oil in there. MT90 all the way! :)

This man knows - he was the primary witness :)

Enough MT90 will cost you £45, and labour on top. Expect to pay for around 30 minutes time.

for that price, id expect them to put in absolute crap....
the process is not that straight forward, and a garage will no dout charge at least and hour to do the job.
so depending on what they charge an hour, you can work out how much there spending on that oil!

Hmm, okay. They said they thought it would take about half an hour if there was a drain plug so they must use cheap stuff. I'm not sure whether to just leave it now as the gearbox is fine as it is. Just thought it was a good idea to change the oil.

Undo drain plug, oil will fall out.

Undo filler plug, (with car level), and fill until fluid leaks out fill plug. We use a syphon pump to fill....

24mm for both plugs

30 mins max.

Anyone know how many litres the gearbox takes?

Also if using the MT-90 do you put something like molyslip with it or is it not needed with MT-90?

Amount all depends whether its LSD or not. IIRC LSD is 3.8l and non LSD is about 4.2? No friction modifyer is needed if running a stock diff because its a sealed unit that uses its own lubrication
