Knocking rear nearside help please

Post by Firestick »

Had the Mk1 for 3 weeks now and there is a distinct and worsening knocking from the rear nearside that seems to be more apparent in slow moving stop/start traffic, reversing etc.

Of course this did not show up in the test drive before I bought it but with my limited knowledge I'm thinking a worn bush or maybe an engine mount.

Three questions:

What do the more exeperienced Mk 1 owners think it is?

How much?

Is it a critical repair, or can it just keep knocking as I want to go to Sushi Sunday next week at Goodwood? :thumleft:

Q1. Could be a number of things.

Q2. Depends what it is.

Q3. If its a droplink, not a major rush.

Try to rock the wheel with your hands at 9 0'clock and 3 0'clock, if there is movement/play then consider tie rods.
If the play is radial then maybe a wheel bearing.
Could also be a bush on the control arm etc or spring/ damper issue. Nobody can say for sure without inspection.

But from your description of stop start traffic, I'd bet an engine mount :thumleft:

If it is the mount and is not sorted soon, your exhaust will break.

I had the same issue when I bought mine a month or so ago.

I replaced the rear droplinks and it seemed to fix it but mine happened all the time over every bump.

My front ones went a week later so I had to replace them too.

The joy!

From experience look at the bottom ball joints, both rear & front, reletively inexpensive to replace & the good thing is that they are easy to change, its probably the cheapest item to replace too, PM me if you need help, cheers, Jinxy

Could possibly be a CV joint? I seem to remember a couple of posts recently about this.

Jack the rear wheel off the ground with the handbrake released (make sure you chock the front wheel) and rotate the wheel gently in either direction if there is a fair bit of movement and a "clonk" before the wheel "bites" then this could well be the problem.

If you get the "clonk" above, support the car on an axel stand and while someone moves the wheel, slide underneath and check the CV boot for any damage etc.

I hope this helps
