MK1 servicing in Cheshire?

Post by timw19 »

Hi all

Just got a red t-bar MK1b - after 15 years of deliberating!!! (Yes, I used to be indecisive and all that ....) It's greeat though. In fab nick, no rust, F reg, 77K on the clock. :D The only things for me to deal with now are the ripped leather seats, but after reading posts here, it seems this is a common problem - and good quality replacements are hard to come by.

Anyway, the main reason for the post was to ask if anyone knows of any good MK1b servicing specialist in my area - Wilmslow/Macc/Stockport. Unfortunately, I'm not a DIY-er so will be relying on a good mechanic who doesn't rip me off.

Will post pics (incl the seats) in due course

Cheers

Hi Tim,

I'm afraid I can't help you with your question (I'm not local to you) but just wanted to say hi and welcome :) Will look forward to seeing your pictures, it sounds like you've bagged a nice example there.

Steve :)

Tim
I'm local to you, but I don't know of any Toyota specialists I can recommend in the area.

Ooh I live in Wilmslow too!

But again we always did all our own bearding so have never used a garage for work.

The only one I know that is okay (they did our MOT's for years and are alright i think)... Paul Dobson in Bridge Street:

I would trust him to do work, he seems fair to me. Not sure how much he does beyond MOTs though. Give him a ring.

Welcome!

There are more Cheshire Mk1 owners out there than I originally thought...

Like the others, I unfortunately don't know of many specialists around here. I had zero experience working on cars previously, but since I've had the mister 2 I've picked up a load of useful information from this site - and it's not too hard either to do the basic service stuff - it's just about having the right tools for the job

I'm 20 ft over the border into Staffordshire from Cheshire.

Try TBE in Alsager - it's a generic garage, but Andy and Tony who run the place are top notch.

Hi All

Cheers for all your replies. Is it me or do all MK1s stimulate interest from people? I've had two dog walkers stop outside my house and talk to me about it, one saying he restores classic cars in Chelford (and has done MR2s), and another couple who said they'd run one for 15 years and really missed it! I think it also helps with mine being in great nick.

I'll post pics of car now, incl seats. The seats are my next project - have been recommended some car trimmers in Cheadle Hulme (Peter Lenton) so may use them. Depends if ebay comes up trumps.

Ta Lauren for the Macc garage lead - I'll give them a call - but maybe this DIY thing is catching. I fitted a new gear knob today and am about to get a steering wheel from Jinxy (seems that's what he's known as!) - v easy to fit so he says ...

Spk to y'all soon and cheers for the welcome

I can recommend Pete Lenton, he did an interior for me a few years ago.

Tbh Tim, doing basic servicing isn't actually that difficult. I used to an oil change in ten minutes (though i've had a bit of practice).. all teh other stuff like doing the plugs is not beyond any capable DIYer.

Maybe give it a go, if you get stuck i'm sure the club members can help you with advice etc.

Finally managed to upload a couple of pics. I won't bore you with ones of the ripped leather seats ...

One pain in the butt tho at the moment is the incessant rain! I bought a car cover (specifically for the Mk1) a couple of weeks ago, but can't put it on till the car's bone dry -and who knows when that'll be??!!! There's a tiny leak from the T-bar (will prob live with it after reading Jinxy's leak curing post ...). I just hope the wet doesn't hasten the appearance of our iron oxide friend 8-[
