[Mk2] [Turbo] Turbo stuttering on foot to the floor accelerating but not on gentle acceleratin

Post by mistertwo_2008_uk »

I have recently purchesed a MR2 Turbo Import on a H Plate (1991).

I have also purchsed from on the forum a induction kit (i`m very happy with the induction kit dont worry i`m not moaning about that!!!)... BUT when installing it i forgot to tighten the nuts properly connecting the induction kit to the AFM....

this caused all sorts of problems i did notice pretty quick but had test driven it before noticing.....

This caused a serious mis-fire which scred the xxxx out of me as i thought i had screwed the engine........

this weeken i had some time so took the plugs out and the were BLACK!! i mean not just a little..... they were DARK BLACK!!!!... replaced these and the mis-fire dissapeared immediatly.....

The only thing i have now is that when i stick my foot to the floor the turbo will spin up and boost then stutter for 2 or 3 secs and then continue to boost right up to the + on the guage....

BUT if i gradualy accelerate the car is smooth and boosts with no probems, no stuttering... and is seriously quick....

On my previous MR2`s (i`ve had a few!) i fitted some KV85`s, i was wondering if you guys/gals had any ideas? could it be the leads breaking down? they are the original leads and up until the car came into my possesion it was COMPLETELY STANDARD!....

Any ideas would ne greatfully appreciated.

I used to be a member on here a long while back around the time when lauren crashed "YUMMY" :-)

i cam to a few meets and used to speak to paul port a lot...

anyways enough of my crap!

Thanks for any help

Darren Pullen

P.S - anybody know the part number for the KV85`s I Need (i think i have a Rev1??)

could be p1$$ing in the wind but have you checked the plug gaps? sounds very much like how my cossie behaves when it's got incorrectly gapped plugs as the boost pressure just blows the spark out before it actually gets to do anything?

I'm sure I know that name but can't think where from - what was your old username on IMOC?

BTW, I live near Swindon and have a spare set of leads from my Rev2 if they're any good for testing...

Thats the thing, i cant remember my old access details!!..

i met up with steve "Goto10" and we had our boost guages fitted at the same time...

my old reg was " C14 DMP " i had a few mr2`s but most had the same plate!.

i would appreciate the use of a set of "TEST" leads!, also i have no clue about "gapping" plugs... i take it there is some for of tool for this?

Thanks for any advice.

If they are platinum plugs they should be pre gaped and can be damaged if you try. If they are out then send them back.

Have you checked the condition of the dizzy cap?

HELLO!!! i`m back.... 95% of the stutter is gone, it did stutter once after dropping from 5th to 4th and flooring it, but 1st,2nd,3r to redline is smooth as you like!

will go and check dizzy and rotor now (the joy`s of having a day off!!)

on one of my mr2`s i was part of a GP done by the legendry Paul Port, for Mark Summers Copper Contact Dizzy Cap`s..... dont suppose they are still about?????

if not is there a recomended type? or a link to where you guys have purchased.

i`m 99% sure mine is a rev1 after checking the chassie number out and the fact its a 91.

I also want to get the KV85`s as previously stated but there are a couple of type`s and i`m not sure of the difference, and which one`s i need to get.

Thanks

as you state it was standard when it came to you, then the ignition components would be old and probably in need of changing. was one of the first things i done when i got my rev 2!

new plugs, leads, cap and rotor arm.

and i did have the copper contact dizzy cap from someone on here, cant remember who though??!

<cough> Probably either Paul or Myself - although it has to be said, its been a long while since I made up any copper contact dizzy caps.

If there's enough interest, I could be persuaded to dust off the old templates and make a few more ...

And FWIW- Rev1 and 2 Dizzy caps and HT leads are different, so for testing a Rev1 you need a Rev1 HT lead set. Rev2-on Turbo all shared the same HT setup.

From the day in question! (...wasn't YAE yours too..?)

Yeah "YAE" was the original plate, and yeah i did have a MK3, and it was ok, but just not enough fun to keep my interest!

Cant remember who else was there, just remeber your gleaming red motor!..

boost hesitation has gone!, it was the plugs, now have correctly gapped plugs in.

just got a new spoiler and just bought a HKS SQV which should be here tomorow!.

i have this week off so i will be spending some time doing some tinkering with the "2"

the stock NGK plug is BKR6EP-8

the 8 at the end stands for .8mm.

so that's your gap.

but as the other bloke said, you could damage a platinum plug by gapping it.

you're fine gapping a plain copper one, which would just be BKR6E.
