So a bit more progress has seen the rear extensions being bonded and then glassed (to avoid cracking on the joins).

Passenger side

Drivers side

Then the resi/glass smoothed and finally filled. You can also see that the doors have been sanded back

and primed

OK so this is the bit that gave me a complete headswim as it was quite involved and also hurt having such a large part being carved up.

I bought a bonnet insert after seeing Kelvin's (kayjay0_1) and Simon's (Sweete) at JAE last year. Loks quite innocuous sitting there.
Image

But then.......like a scene out of robot wars Pat started on it.
Image

Until it looked like this.
Image

Then a bit more fettling from the guvnor himself
Image

And it looked like this. Pat was careful to retain as much of the webbing on the underside to keep the bonnet rigid but there was some leeway there as these are mainly bracing the frame.
Image

Then with it fitted and trimmed, it was filled.
Image

Image

A view from the front.
Image

Until it was smoothed and primed and looks pretty awesome by all accounts. Again the bonding is strong and shouldn't crack and the underside of the webbing will be glassed to give it some additional strength and finish it properly. In all fairness I'm amazed at how good this has turned out.

Nice work mate, progressing nicely! My only concern would be all that filler in the bonnet vent, and the risk of it cracking, especially since the bonnet is subject to open/closing etc.

yes but its glassed as well so it should be ok I really hate putting these things in but what john says goes it is hes car ,its all bonded under side as well there is fibreglass across the ribs and I tested it slamed it hard
once it all all rubbed down there is not a lot of filler left it looks a lot to blend it out to lose the edges

OK so today saw some significant change in as much as the kit and bonnet vent are now bonded and permanently fitted. So the day was spent doing the stopper filling and sanding down (which was not a lot in the great scheme of things) and flatting the paint on the rest of the chassis and doors.

After a long day, it finally all came together when the car took it's first coat of high build primer that gave it a much more uniform appearance and the bigger picture could be seen. Now it's starting to look a lot more like a TRD Widebody.

Image

my favourite, just look at the finish and the smooth lines.

Image

The bonnet with insert.
Image

Image

After that the primer was highlighted in black ready to show the surface imperfections. Even now it still looks good.

I quite agree Phil, there must be 3-4 days purely for stripping down, sanding the original paint and flatting the new layers and reassembly.

Work out the cost of that alone at the hourly rate and you can see why a proper respray is at least £1500 and that's without fitting a kit as well.

It really has opened my eyes to how involved it is.

Amazing, and involved like you say.

The bootlid is a long way out by the looks of things, is it not on its hinges?

Intrigued to see this with spoiler on. Almost tempted to say you should keep it without spoiler, if there's no TRD rep available.

The bootlid has been gapped to ensure it fits correctly between the wing extension but isn't secured on it's hinges so there is a little bit of creep at present.

Not you as well, Callum #-o :D :D I've had several users suggest this and it may be worth leaving the boot undrilled just to see what it's like.

So with the side skirts and wings that Pat fitted during the week, I got myself down to Bexhill headquarters to flat some primer. A painstaking job but doing it by hand with a sanding block gives a good base for the top coats. So I set about flatting as follows:

Passenger Door
New bootlid
Front bumper
Vented Inspection panels
Rear Screen surround
Door handles

......and then it was given a final wet flatting with a sanding pad, masked off where needed and today Pat gave it a layer of undercoat.

When I got there the body kit was fitted and looking good.

Then the hard work of flatting.

Then after flatting the lot we masked it.

And finally today Pat undercoated the lot and I have to say that when I saw these pics I couldn't quite believe it. This really now is looking like the finished article and I know it's even better in the flesh than it is in the images.

Bonnet looks great

The lines look out standing.

And finally the vented inspection panels.

This is just stunning and I can't wait to get down there and finish it. Outstanding work Patrick.
