obviously a few do or his thread wouldnt have made it past the first post.
Dont knock it till you have tried it. As far as i'm aware the only time you have had a go is totb when you where supposed to be part of a team and had to be forced to have a go. Look at vince aka Talent in the US, he was trying for 6 years to get the car into the 9's and eventually acheived his goal, the dedication/time/effort/money etc that was put in to that has to be recognised/applauded though you obviously dont think so.

jonno wrote:Surely if straight lines were your thing you wouldnt be messing around with a mid engined car in the first place?

weight over the rear = good traction of the line

whats wrong with that?

Why hasnt anybody done it yet? Because its pointless and anyone with enough intelligence to earn enough money to do it has enough inelligence to realise that its not worth doing :)

so what exactly have YOU acheived with your track only car?

Nope, I'm with Jonno on this one.

Once you get like up to 600bhp, the MR2 is NOT the car for the job!

With that power, give it to anything 4 wheel drive and it will eat the MR2 everytime. Off the line, going down the strip, the lot.

They are just not built to handle MASSIVE power.

really got to stop laughing here. :)

an mr2 isn't a drag car - a top fuel dragster is. an mr2 isn't a track car - an ultima GTR is. an mr2 is a road car - but it's a road car with the potential to do pretty well on the track OR on the strip, and most importantly, it can make it's owner smile and be pleased with how it's done.

Hmmm ... if my landy had had 600hp it still wouldn't of beaten my mr2 on the drag strip - so that's the four wheel drive is best for drag racing myth smashed. hehe (i know that's not really what you meant skywalker, but hey ... we're all still smiling :) )

I just want a good all rounder, and i think the 2 can manage that!!

BTW Simon doesn't have any secret weapons up his sleeve, just 2 bar+ boost....its the only way to get good times...group buy on 4 bar map sensors is it :)

I can back that up-when I was up pod, trying to get the kart to do lower than 11's is difficult, bu once your in the 10's it seems really consistant.

This is exactly what i was hoping to get! People asking themselves why the f$$k hasent anyone built a 10sec mr2? and as quigonjay says, people DO care because the thread is getting a good response!

My opinion is that when i stand beside the track at santa pod whatching an MR2 launch, everytime im surprised by how well they come off the line and its thanks to its mid-engine set up. i have beaten many 4 wheel drive cars off the line and stayed in front due to the amount of traction available(in the dry!). if people in other countrys are capable of running 9's then we are capable of the same and that would really get the car recognised! at track days the MR2 is great and surprised many subaru, skyline owners etc who came up to me after a track day at snetterton and coudnt believe how fast the car was and the fact that i was drifting around the corners behind them and still staying close to them and passing them!!

i feel, and i dont think its a bad thing because the cars are great mildly tuned, but my feeling is that the mr2 is overlooked as a competitive car by many people and has a lot of potential if the owner sacrifices comfort and goes further in their quest for more power!!

as has been stated aerodynamics are another bonus and if japanese drivers are running 10second 1/4's on street tyres!! we can get there on slicks/track tyre!! if i still have my MR2 in a couple of months its coming off the road and slowly but surely its gona become a quick 2

=D> =D> =D> =D> =D> ,exactly!! the car is capable, if i had the money i'd do it! do you think haldor and his 9 second scooby were worried about it not being worth it! or russ and his 9 second rx7!!! a few years ago no one had an rx7 in the uk that even did 10's! there's been alot of discussion about the alfa mr2. this car did 10's in japan...... in 1998,lets just repeat that 1998 :!: 8 years ago.

I think everyone who gets a taste for more power when they buy a MR2 starts to think "i want a 9/10 second car"...i did, the problem is the car is so non usable as anything else, but to run it in most drag events we take part in, it has to be road leagal, but then the main reason you bought an MR2 is to zooom round corners on country roads ect ect, so unless you can afford to have one car parked up a month at a time while the next event comes up your pretty snooker'd.... would be good fun though!!!

i beg to differ
i dont know what sort of times a 600hp skyline puts down on the strip but considering the 300+ extra kgs of weight i bet a 600hp mr2 would whup its ass

To give you an idea of the ability of the MR2's launching, did anyone know that the Japs only allow the MR2 to compete in the 4WD 1/4 mile events! Gives you some idea as to just how good the 2 can be in the right hands :)

The car can do it, but its like Andy said, if you look at any of the other cars in them times (4wd included) the cars are no longer road cars, although possabily road legal they are trailered to and from events.

I think its pretty good going that Simons car, in complete standard trim, spare wheel as well! Can run an 11.1 and if anyone knows Simon im sure you will know he is determined to improve it!

Just to clear up, he has done ALL the work on that car himself the engine was standard when he got it.

Just to add fuel to the fire...

My feeling is that most folk who tune their 2 have a subconcious desire to rebel against the crowd... a sort of a 'giant killer' attitude...
... a small car
... an attractive car
... no four wheel drive
... no four wheel steer
... no active yaw control
... still fun around the corners
... and no £45,000 spending spree

Each to their own... and best of luck to you all :D
