It'll be 105db drive-by. Circuits as rule will not allow louder than this.

How strictly they enforce it is another matter of course. Your exhaust would have to be pretty loud to exceed this tbh. However I would not advise you to run without silencers in an effort to see if you can get away with it. It may also be worth remembering that should a circuit breach its noise regulations it faces fines etc and it just puts pressure on the circuit owners to become stricter. For this reason i would not push the boundaries of the noise limits because you may well be spoiling it for others in the future.

I spoke to the track owner today about noise levels.

He advised a 105dB drive by limit (no set distance) - which is loud! It seems it all a bit of a grey area, they don't seem to have any hard and fast rules, and also don't really seem to be overly fussed.

So unless your car is stupidly loud I think you will be ok. 105 dB drive by is probably alot louder than most road cars will ever be even with the biggest fattest exhaust going. However for those that do have a loud exhaust and bungs to go with them it would be worth bringing it along on the day just in case - but I doubt they will be needed.

Last time I went they didnt test a single car and there were some loud cars.

Malcolm, is your exhaust really that loud? Last time I heard it didn't seem too bad?

FYI everyone, you can also buy noise meters online relatively cheaply to check in advance - Try Ebay.

I measured it at 113db peak at 0.5m (4500rpm), but that was with an uncalibrated noise meter (my phone). I'll borrow one from work this weekend so we can have a proper check, it should be fine as I know the phone measures a good few db higher than a calibrated one (we checked).

Helps having an acoustics dept.

Will be interesting to see what it comes out driveby wise... though 113db is roughly 3 times louder than 105db! So its not like its slightly over, its over by a few miles.

Yeah I know, the 113 was due to a backfire when Malcolm lifted off, it was sitting at 109 constant IIRC. Still pretty extreme but the error range on my phone is fairly wide.

It's definately louder than James' 500BHP RX7.

It is pretty loud, not sure I would exceed 105 on a drive by though because of the distance, but have to say in the cold air it has been generating quite a bit more noise for some reason.

Stick a potatoe up each exhaust

Merlin motorsport can make you up some slot in mufflers if you are really worried?

Best get chris to test it with his work sound meter just to be safe, I expect your going to be ok. Do a drive by test at full chat and see what happens and do a static.

If they do take a test it will likley be from the control tower where you will be slowing down and then hard on the brakes for the bus stop so thats in your favour.

I'm fairly sure you can hire a calibrated sound meter from Bookatrack for £10ish - I've done this in the past to check noise levels.

Then again, the same meter is about £30 from Maplin ..

105dB = ~ Mk2 with NUR-Spec exhaust without baffle. Anything with JASMA approval should be around 98dB.

Can those on this list let me know when you have paid?

Nick did you want to bring another car? Happy to accomodate if you did.

Cheers

at a constant 45000 rpm mine was at 90db.
when i revved it, let it drop and revved it again i.e. bounced the throttle it came out at 105db, that without hitting 45000 revs when doing it.
run a risk on the drive by depending on the distance.

 We didn't test the redline as it's not tested at trackdays and I don't think the people at the Hampshire pageant fo Motoring would have approved!

This was with a calibrated sound meter BTW.
