So if you're having problems with your EBC, maybe try unplugging it and putting a MBC on just to see what happens. If all is well and good you've found your problem

Thanks dude, I'll put that on the list of things to try :)

And just to remind everyone that it's getting actual detonation according to the tuning company guys who hooked up a device for listening for det. They told me that anything over 5000rpm was giving so much det it could wreck the engine! :O

Would defo rip out the pipes on the AVCR and try running standard boost to see how its running. Then you could get an inline fuel pressure gauge to see if the pressure is correct going into the engine. Also change your O2 and knock sensors.. if you dont want to buy new phone these guys for second hand parts (good and tested working parts).

I picked up used o2 and knock sensors on friday, along with a fuel pump. and I'm going to fit the sensors (with a local forum members help) next week and the week after I'll get the pump fitted. Hopefully one of those will sort it but I doubt it knowning my recent spell of luck.

To top it all off my house was burgled last night ](*,)

Yea lady luck has it in for me at the moment for some reason. But not to worry. I'll get it all sorted eventually :)

Had a look at this car tonight.

We went for a few laps of the block and I'll describe what happened:

Accelerating in second, there is a real hesitation (around 4Kish) and then it pulled really strongly.

Put the car in first and brought it gently up to 5K then floored it. The car immediately slowed down (almost thrown forward!) and then pulled really strongly.

It's sort of like when you whip open the throttle on a carbed engine - it hesitates and then picks up.

We did this with the O2 sensor disconnected.

There was a pop or two from the exhaust during gear changes after slowing down.

It pulled to 1.16 bar.

The engine is a Rev 2 with a Rev 3 conversion.

Any ideas?

Seems to me that the map sensor may be faulty?

I just have to add that when Stephen says it pulled really strongly, he hasn't been in the car when it was performing normally and the 1.16bar we saw tonight was still hugely less powerful than it should be. I also should add that tonight was what I'd call a "good night" as most of the time I don't get any real power at all. It's intermittant.

Too much boost. The ecu is detecting knock and then is throwing in loads of fuel and retarding the timing.

Back off the boost. Take the ebc off and go back to stock and check again. Try a simple mbc and gradually increase the boost to around 1bar / 14-15psi.

Reuben,

Sorry to see you having so much trouble with this. :( You haven't seemed to have to much luck at all - but easy on the slating mate.

The whole wadge of receipts you got with my old car and not to mention the fact that no expense was spared in the running of it had no reflection on what happened.

I had no idea - I did not rip you off and I resent you even suggesting it. Not too pleased with you saying that mate - and I understand you are upset about other bits and pieces, but I was genuienly shocked to hear about it all when you told me.

Is the VSV still plugged in by any chance?

Okay, we need to disconnect that boost controller.

VSV?

Is it on the other side of the actuator from the turbo?

Could someone point it out using a picture from this site? http://mr2.noegruts.com/engine/engine.htm

Just reading a bit about it:

Q: The car knocks a little under boost and the power drops off suddenly,

The symptoms are that when running UK 95 Octane unleaded petrol, when accelerating the engine knocks (/pinks) and this is being detected by the engine knock sensor. In order to protect the engine the ECU retards the timing until no more knocking is detected. If the ECU is still detecting knocking at this point, it may go one step further and close the turbo VSV, to limit the boost to a lower, safer, value.

This often happens at around 5k rpm, and if accelerating hard with full boost there is a quite noticeable drop in power as the ECU closes the VSV and the boost level drops. This is probably caused as in Japan Unleaded fuel is either 98 or 100 octane.

The only cure is to retard the spark timing at the distributor: In my case, it had to be moved to 5 degrees BTDC, and the car will run 95 Octane unleaded, at the expense of a little top end power and affect cold engine performance.

Turbo VSV

VSV = Vacuum Switching Valve. This is the unit that will limit your boost in certain conditions. Under normal situations the boost pressure from your turbo is bled away from the wastegate (boost control device) causing a higher boost pressure of about 8 psi. Under conditions such as cold weather or some other situation where full boost should not be attained, the VSV closes. This forces all the boost pressure to the wastegate. This will make the wastegate open earlier and cause you to run about 5 psi until conditions improve. This device should be disabled when used with an electronic boost controller.

Seems like it is used as a safeguard.

If it is where I think it is then it is disconnected.

Should it be plugged in when the EBC is disconnected, but a manual one is in place? I'm thinking not.

Currently there is a pipe going from the turbo to the EBC, then from the EBC to the actuator. The pipe on the other side of the actuator has a pipe joined to it which is blocked off. The rubber pipe which would go on there is blocked off too, presumably it goes to the VSV?

To change it all back to stock, should there be a pipe running from the turbo, direct to the actuator, then another one from the actuator to the VSV?

I was just surprised that the engine failed so soon after I bought it off you, considering it wasn't on the cheap end of the price range having the mileage that it did and so I expected a well sorted car.

I'm not saying you intentionally sold me a lemon. However, I did buy a lemon, whether you knew about it or not. I'm sure it's just my own misfortune and I apologise for saying that you ripped me off as you may not have done so.

I imagine if you paid a high price for a minter and it cost you a grand and a half in repair bills shortly after you'd be a bit annoyed too.

Anyway, the car's gone now and the new owner seems to be enjoying it and it's new engine :D

Hats off to Stefen for helping out so much recently! Much appreciated dude!

And to everyone else who's been following this thread and giving suggestions, a huge THANKS to you all! I'm gradually narrowing it down so hopefully it's only a matter of time until I find this elusive problem.

I know how you feel about stuff like this - I bought my turbo and a few months later the turbo itself died - it was new the year before (so I figured would give me no problems at all). Not my fault, not the fault of my mate that I bought the car from. That cost me the best part of a grand straight away - so I know what you mean.

I don't want to have a needless discussion on here, but I genuinely felt the car was a minter by all the TLC that had gone into it when I sold it. I was sad to see her go. Surely you would appreciate if i wanted to scam someone then I wouldn't pick someone of here would I? It had been spot on for nearly 3 years before I sold it so never expected a problem.

Anyhow, best of luck getting this problem of yours sorted.

Back to torment you all again.

I'm just after disconnecting the two tubes that go into and out of the avcr boost control valve and connecting them together, bypassing the avcr altogether. It made no difference at all. The turbo starts to spool up, then bang, I get lunged forward in my seat and then boost starts to pick up ever so slowly again. And at this point the engine warning light comes on.

Error codes still read "lean error" and " knock error"

:-k

So I've ruled out the following suspects:

O2 sensor
Fuel pressure regulator
Ignition components
Apexi avcr boost controller
Timing
Air intake

Since the pipe going away from the actuator is blocked off, surely the effect of removing the boost controller from the equation and joining the two pipes together would be to engage the waste gate actuator at the first sign of boost?

I may not understand this correctly yet though...

Anyone?

I don't really know what it does but it made no difference whatsoever :(. So, I don't think the avcr is causing the problem.

This is a real 'shot in the dark' but I don't suppose this could be a knackered battery/alternator? I haven't read back through the thread again but when I first test drove my car it would run fine until I started to boost - it would then display these symptoms (severe hesitation and engine warning light). Unlikely I think from what I remember of your problem but another possible factor in the equation maybe?
