Thanks mate.

Work continued today on the arches, i finished off one of them that now only requires high build primer and painting...

Image

I also got the OSR arch fibral'd ready for final filler...

Image

The NSF arch has had its secondary fibral skim to get the basic profile right, lots more work to do here however...

Part of my excercise in building my ultimate "useable" Mk1 is giving it a big brake upgrade, not just for performance reasons though, my stock brakes were excellent, but i've had a lot of experience fitting big calipers to Mk1's in the past with great results.

I did consider a few options, including Keri's excellent WMS kit, but my budget wouldn't stretch that far and i need to spend in other areas.

So armed with piston specs, master cylinder displacements and my best guess i've come up with the following combo.

I've bought some Aston Martin V8 Vantage rear four pot Brembos, the piston size and caliper size is just about perfect....

Image

Now to get these working behind my Borbet wheels is no easy task, i have 45mm to play with between the stock disc face and the back of the wheel spokes, the Brembos are 60mm from their disc face to the outside of the caliper, so i needed 15mm from somewhere. It is not possible to fit spacers because my arches are already done.... poo.

So i set about researching discs, finding one with 15mm more offset inside the hub to take the disc inboard enough to both clear the caliper mounting point and also give me that extra spoke clearance. In the end i found some Range Rover II 2.5 TD (94-02) discs that are pretty much perfect. They are 297mm diameter, 25mm thick and will place the caliper in the right spot with mm's to spare.... awesome.

Image

The only mod i need to do is drill the 4x100 PCD into them and have some spigot rings made (70.0mm OD, 54.1mm ID, 5mm thick), after that i'll make some caliper brackets, pretty easy being radial mounted ones, done this loads of times before.

I'll also be going for Goodridge hoses, Renault 5 turbo ones to be exact, they're perfect for calipers like this.

Today was spent doing more arch work, i end up looking like a cocaine dealer that's had an accident but it's a necessary evil to get the job done. Lot's more profiling to get the arch flowing nicely into the front lip but it's starting to take shape.

A few more weekends of this and it'll be ready for some high build primer and then paint.

Bank holidays are effing marvy aren't they?

This morning i have mostly been doing the Woodsport crystal sidelight/indicator mod.

I showed a few of you these little beautys at JAE last year, we all know about the clear lenses you can buy from Toyota but it always bugged me that you can get nice crystal side repeaters but nothing to match the front, the opaque bathroom shower door look of the "clear" lenses is not clean enough for this build, i wanted something new looking and fresh.

So, i had these custom made, proper divided housings with sidelight and orange indicator bulbs, glass fronted lenses, none of your plastic here oh no! Metal bodied surround and a custom bracket, they cost a fortune to do but hey ho i'm a Mk1 nutjob and <flicks hair> ..... i'm worth it.

Woodsport crystals...

Image

They are slightly smaller than stock, i wanted to narrow the bumper apeture with this mod, to make them slightly less understated... the devil's in the detail and all that crap. When it's flushed over and painted the bumper will look stock to the uninitiated.

Designed to compliment these repeaters...

Image

Clears Vs Woodsport Crystals...

Image

The crystals mocked up....

Image

Image

And with the apeture modified with its first stage of Fibral...

Image

Image

I like this..... a lot.

they have a silver coating but flash orange, look better than the fried egg appearance of an orange bulb in a silver reflector, a cheapskate option is just to mist spray your orange bulb with silver paint, but proper bulbs are available

OMG I'm teaching the master
apparently its silvatec! #-o

just the indicators and reversing lights not the stop/tail lamp, i recon it would look good
as the lenses come apart it shouldn't be a major job to replace lenses & reflectors

while I love the ingenuity of your mod Jimi I would love proper automotive quality lenses, kind of robbing your idea but taking it to the next level.

Spent more time on the WS crystal sidelight mod, almost finished the bumper apertures now, i think it'll take a keen eye to spot they have been modified once painted.

Working on the last of the wheel arches now along with the sideskirts, not long before it sees some paint.

Thanks Sam, it's one of those projects were you don't see the overall look of the car until it's painted, very happy with it so far though, really need to get those coilovers onto it, get it dropped by about 20mm.

All four arches are now in high build primer, this is just the first coat, it will take a few hours of wet flatting and more high build before it gets the desired finish and then i can concentrate on the top coat.

Front modified indicator recesses now primed, i can see these still need work but pretty happy so far.

So a few more weekends of this and it should be ready for paint.
