Well it's not a good representation of the anime. It' s a watchable film if you're desperate for your fill of an AE86 bouncing off the rev limiter, but I think, if you've watched all 4 series of Initial D, then you will find it a bit lacking. /5 more sleeps to go.
i think you are being a bit unfair on the film
i did try watching the first few episodes of the anime but i didnt get hooked on it
i'm guessing most petrolheads that have not seen the anime would like the film too
is it just that it doesnt follow the anime that puts you off?
it must be as we cant really be comparing dialogue or acting skills
Well, I think you are right in that if you haven't watched the anime, you'll likely think better of the film.
The film is an hour and a half or so, whilst the anime is 14 DVD's for the entire series, so it's no surprise that the film kind of skips through it all.
Also it seemed to portray Bunta as some kind of alcoholic IIRC, which wasn't true to the anime.
We have a complete set and funnily enough Mark thought he'd rip them so we could play the lot at my 40th.
I have the full box sets from Tokyo Pop. Unfortunately quality is not great (especially 4th stage - subtitles make no sense at all, although mine might be pirated) but I'm currently buying them again from the US as Funimation now have the rights and have re-dubbed and re-subtitled them all anbd quality is much better
Funimation are not releasing them as box sets though so you need to buy them individually, although it's not many discs considering the number of episodes:
1st stage - 2 parts
2nd stage - In full
3rd stage - one disc (cinema release)
4th stage - 2 parts
IIRC
Not sure about the status of the extra stage or battle stages.
Check out Amazon.
Shiny Toyota AE86 parts:
Also cannot believe I managed to get the O/S rear wheel arch extension from Toyota:
The one on there looks like it got damaged in shipping.
Right, I'm all set for a stupidly early start tomorrow(!).
Will have to leave by 5am.
Somehow you can tell I'm picking up a 25 year old car as I've got a complete ignition system, lots of tools and a K&N which may or may not go on depending if I can do it very easily.
Absolutely can't wait, but there is certainly some anxiety with hoping all is going to be okay as it's not the same (I've noticed) as picking up a new car.
It's going to be a busy weekend, but I've employed the help of some friends to share the bearding with.
Still, it feels like I'm coming home/returning to the fold, what with getting back into a rusty old Toyota!
So if you happen to be on the M40, M42, M6 tomorrow morning, look out for an AE86.
Wish me luck!
I won't be on those roads tomorrow but good luck anyway.
Will you be bringing it to JAE and have you got a name for it yet?
It may behave better on the way home if you give it a talking to and tell it it's new name. HEHE
looking forward to seeing the pics too, got a soft spot for this type of car.
anyway, i was sifting through pistonheads classifieds and saw these... http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2605426.htm
not sure if they fit??? not that clued up on the ae86 but thought i'd mention them!
ps i'm not connected with the seller etc just saw watanabe and thought of this post lol
Well I made it home!
Love it!
Changed all the ignition parts which didn't cure the flatspot at 3K, but I think it might be down to fueling or TVIS. Need to look.
Diff works very well, as a quick test in a car park and erm being a bit naughty on a roundabout proved it's nice and tight. Reckon it'll handle pretty nicely.
Suspension is very stiff. Thought I'd need a new pair of kidneys after catching some undulating road on the M40. Going to have a look at that and see what it is.
Brakes are screwed, front discs are in a shocking state and pedal is spongey.
That Bride seat might be all the rage, but I'm really not convinced as I don't find it comfortable. May sell that.
Will post pics and all that later, going to get it on stands and give it a good going over.
Overall, I think it's pretty clean, but in desperate need of a bit of TLC. I left at 5am this morning so feeling a bit wired right now. Too many lattes!
Only pic I have is from the M40 services, resplendent with McD's on the roof!
Hey, thought we'd check the cam timing as we've got still got that flat spot at 3K rpm which is pretty annoying. Anyways took off the cam covers and found this:
Reckon there's a good chance that it'll have HKS cams too, but who knows what. Did wonder why the idle was set at 1500rpm. To be fair once you clear the flat spot it does pull pretty well higher up the rev range. It'll have to be setup on the rollers I reckon. Haven't looked at the ECU yet as it's under the bloody carpet!
Looking at the rear dampers they seem to be 8 way adjustable. Am guessing TRD blues. It's rock hard I tell you! Found the rear tyres were at 45psi! I guess that helped it drift pretty well.
A few other pics, but the lights gone now so anymore will have to wait till tomorrow.
Found a few bits lying around the shed and Mark stuck a K&N on. Turned out that when next door had their guttering replaced, a bit of downpipe landed in our garden. Little did we know it'd work perfectly for joining the K&N to the Samco! Well, waste, not want not!
Brake discs are shocking though, so will have to sort that out pretty soon.
