Having test driven a couple of Porsche's now Matt has hit the proverbial nail on the head. These cars are the whole package, sorry but it's unarguable!! MR2s are not the whole package even when extensively modified as there are always compromises or elements of unreliability, or the expense of just a comfortable car to drive to the shops.

To say they are not drivers cars is just shocking! I've driven a few now, and there is no doubt in my mind my next car is a Porsche!

Asbsolute nail on the head there too.

Consider also that there is a HUGE difference in what makes a fast ROAD car and a fast TRACK car. Slapping a set of silly low and hard coilovers on an MR2 does not necessarily equal a good road car - god knows why people do it! The 911 may not be as fast as a say a completely track prepped MR2, but the MR2 will be making the compromise, as it'll bea pig to drive on the road.

The beauty is that even your basic 911 will be fast in all situations, rewarding, and comes with a LOT more class. The point earlier about modifications not buying class is well made.

To state that an MR2 for example is a better car than a 911 because you dislike the 911 is hideously blinkered.

honestly, i'd stick with my '2 - unless somebody would swap for a flat nose 1980 911 turbo - preferably in martini racing colours, and obviously with just the four forward gears. To me, all 911's from the 964 onwards have lost their way (even if they are faster, and handle better).

I felt the same until I got into one of the damn things. :P I even despised the way Boxsters look...until I got a drive in a 3.2S. I had to physically restrain myself from taking out a large loan to buy it, LOL. (and it wasn't even yellow, it was black!! )

Go testdrive if you can, I heartily recommend it. If you don't like it then you've got no soul. But you have got the full story.

While we're all being bitchy... you say the new porsches are faster and handle better, so what way have they lost exactly? Can't be the ultimate driving machine as that's more evident than ever :S

I concur. I think some people are stuck in a Jap trance. I love my MR2 (damn sexy thing) but recognize also that there are other great cars out there. I respect all Performance cars, be they Jap turbo nutter mobiles, German precision weapons or Italian Supercars.

Here's a friendly tip, don't drive a 911 shortly before testing a cayman. You won't like it even though it's a stunning car :(

Interesting - had heard the Cayman was so much better they had to not put an LSD in it so it didn't compete!!

I enjoyed it right up to the point i was spinning the inside wheel coming out of a junction and going no where. After that it felt a little hollow

Ahhh!!

Sounds like that is an issue then!

I absolutely loved the Boxster 3.2S. I loved the balance, the turn in, the brakes, the instant NA power and most of all the comfort - I felt I could drive to the South of France in one and arrive refreshed. Really did open my eyes!

what have they lost ?

1) the shape. From the 964 on, the classic 911 shape is no more. Even the 935 had the basic shape of a real 911, the extra wide arches, flat nose etc. somehow added to the cars 911-ness. From the 964 onwards, the true 911 shape is being lost :(.
2) the sound. A turbocharged air cooled 6 cylinder engine has a voice all of it's own.
3) they've lost the "at least i don't have to worry about water leaks" - water cooling ! prof. porsche wouldn't of stood for it !
4) they've lost the rarity. the cars are produced in higher numbers now, and are much more common.
5) they've lost the whale tail !

Amazing cars, yes. but the whole package just doesn't have the same kudos it used to (at least in my eyes).

Thank you :)

Porsche vs Toyota .. when you turn up outside the Ritz in your car, one car will get you through the door, the other will get you turned away.

Being able to say "But it's beaten a 911 off the lights" will not make a difference.

And if you start modding a 997 .. you end up with the 225mph RUF RT12. Which is still a daily drivable car.

Image

Which overtook me round Nur like I was stationary .. (I was doing about 125mph round a corner at the time).

They had the RT12 and the YellowBird at Nur over Easter (driving about side by side - with a camera man hanging out an RS4 taking pics).

Clicky For two pics of them .. I've a LOAD more, just not online.

Apparently one of those and an F40 on track at Nur over Easter too .. I never saw them though :(

That's worth doing a few slow laps just to see&hear half the cars out there.
