What sort of spool, boost and hp is a ct20b capable of with a stronger shaft, 360 thrust bearing and larger compressor. Still using the standard exhaust turbine. I would port the wastegate to its limits too.
At the moment i'm just thinking of rebuilding it with a 360 thrust bearing, would going the hole hog net me more hp

This was another option for me. And I would guess a cheaper one too.
Again, happy to run at 1.0 to 1.1 (somewhere between 300-330?), what do people think?

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Which turbo for quick spool
I've recently had my ct20b rebuilt with steel shaft and 360 degree thrust bearing so would like to know if it could handle more boost.
My fuelling is still stock but the engine has been forged.
Im just running 1bar of boost just now but would like to turn it up a bit more if the fuelling can take it.
Cheers, Michael.

I'd go with a GT28RS or better still the GTX2860R.

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Which turbo for quick spool
I made 330bhp at 1.3 bar on a turbo technics s148 ct26 hybrid.
The gt2860 is a cracking little turbo, lovingly referred to as a 'disco potato'. Comes on the s bodied nissans iirc. The only problem with running something that isn't a direct fit, is the extra costs involved for fabrication work/wastegate/downpipe/oil lines etc etc.
Personally, I didn't like the ct20b on mine, I much preferred the power delivery of a standard ct26. It spooled super fast, and was a real handful - I seldom used to drive the car over 6k rpm, so I didn't mind that the boost tailed off a bit.
I found the 20b to be a bit lack lustre

It's not standard equipement... but it is a direct bolt-on replacement for their GT25s IIRC

Very nice numbers, must admit I like my high reving ct20b but could be persuaded by a lower rpm 330bhp on tap

I'll be running 1.5 bar/22 psi on my CT26 hybrid, so would equate to around 360bhp.
Hopefully I'll get that out of it. Watch this space.
Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Which turbo for quick spool
All I see when people start trying to push numbers from CT series turbos is a total waste of time and money. There was a fella on here some time ago, Mark Edwards, who had the fully built engine with $$$$$ thrown at it running over 1.5 bar boost and barely pushed over 280rwhp.
A friend of mine put down 290rwhp at 1 bar on a stock ct20b on a built motor with a Link ECU running 95 octane pump gas!
You could get better numbers by just fitting a real turbo to a stock gen3 engine and spend the money on engine management and intercooling.

Really hope you hit your numbers Craig keep us informed mate

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Which turbo for quick spool
Interesting thread.
Which turbo would be best suited for a full time track car?
I don't want anymore than 400whp and it must have a sharp spool.
It'll be on a fully built motor.

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Which turbo for quick spool
400whp = ~470bhp in an MR2
GTX2867r on a larger turbine housing, or maybe GTX3067r, or even a GTX3071r should do you.
If you want to stick to GT series, then you're looking at a GT3076r

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Which turbo for quick spool
Are the GTX turbos a lot better than the GT series, Ash?
Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Which turbo for quick spool
The flow data suggests that they are- quicker spool, and better top end flow. From the limited number of cars we've seen running them so far- they do look as good as claimed as well...but they are still quite new, so expensive...
Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Which turbo for quick spool
Guys since power is a fabricated figure from a formula, and revs is part of that equation, obviously anything that allows the engine to rev higher is going to create a more impressive (on paper) hp figure.
So arguing over revving and peak HP on a thread about quicker spool and grunt in the lower registers is a tad silly
Watching with interest, as power all over the lower range is more what I'd ultimately like, even if it means sacrificing the willy waving peak HP a bit

Seems to be between gear spool is better on the EFR rather than simply outright spooling at earlier RPM
Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Which turbo for quick spool
My TT CT based hybrid made over 400 bhp on just 1.4 bar. The cars performance is pretty vivid. Boost comes in with a massive rush at just under 3800rpm and pulls hard and relentlessly to 8000rpm were the limiter is presently set. My aim is to push the boost to 1.8 bar, but I will have to change a few things first.
The best thing with this hybrid is that I can change it with a std ct20 when needed as all fittings are interchangeable.
