resprays

Post by robertagar »

My Panel beater can do a total respray for under £800 provided he does not have to pre-spray the car black to mask the original colour. He will need to know the present colour and the colour you would like. Metallics will cost another £100.

His workshop is in Surrey.

Sounds like I might have to pay a visit to him. Any contact details?

No point in telling him the current colour, what can I say but custom blue/violet/cyan pearl lol, there is no name for it as its completly 1 off etc.

But is masking the original colour normal? Surely the rubdown and priming would mask the original colour...

Respray

Post by robertagar »

Call him by all means, Steve Davis 077149 55533. White to any colour will be no problem, but Red to Blue or even White will need pre-spraying lest the base colour infiltrates over time.

Rubbing down to base metal will require undercoat and top coats and clear lacquer if metallic. This may cost more.

Tell him that I sent you and he will give you a good deal.

Bob Agar
ps: He might need to keep the car for 2 or 3 days.

I should think he will need the car for 2 or 3 days, at least!!

And any spray job requires undercoat (if any bodywork done and filler, fibreglass etc there) and top coats and lacquer (whatever it is), either I have been misinformed in the past about paintwork or this isnt filling me with confidence about this bloke.

painting

I must confess that I am not an expert on paint procedures.

If dents need fixing, he will do it anyway else why bother with a total respray. Details like fillers and undercoats are his problem, I cannot speak for him; only what he told me about covering some colours.

Of course he will charge for any bodywork repair. For an economical and satisfactory job he is the man.

I had parking dents on 2 doors of my 7 series done by Cooper Thames Ditton , a BMW franchise for a cool £750 some 10 years ago. They messed up my door card as the pull handle fell off, the main beams pointed towards the heavens, the driving beams lit up the numberplate and the all electric drivers seat was all but removed. Er, were they trying to swap it for a mate's knakkered seat. If I did not push them to get on with while it in their waiting room as they were resetting the lights they might have got away with it.

So you have a choice, and as they say you get what you pay for. . .not always true.

Anyway if I need any repairs or painting done in future I will use him and avoid mainline dealers like the plague. He has been useful for the past 10 years as and when my kids smashed up their cars; he repaired the unrepairable.

A similar story applies to Trident Honda. it's not the garage but the bent mechanic or salesman (now sacked) who spoils it for us.

Im just very weery when it comes to paintworkk as I have been bitten once already.

Think I got my bodyshop sorted now, they made some mad motorbikes so I know their paintwork is second to none, and thats all I will need as the rest Im doing myself (when it stops bloody raining!)
