Well when you've got the paint done you can get it MoTd, taxed & ready for the road
That should take a week or so at the speed you produce results
You can start to run it in then & see if it settles

Re: Mk1b restoration... its alive..and painted!!
So today has been a good day!
for those of you that have followed the previous thread you will straight away see the difference in how the car is running... seriously smoke free!
I had ran the car up and down the road and it was now good and warm (still not been able to get it past half way) but the smoke was still present same as before.
A few days ago i read about how oil through the cam breather back into the plenum could cause smoking (often a sign of stem seal wear) so i had blown it through a few times to make sure it was clear and clean.
Just before putting it back in the garage i decided to check for oil int he breather... and with the engine running i pulled the pipe off the cam cover to a hugh release of air pressure!
i thought surely that not right... there wasn't much oil luckily or i guess i could have been burn't but definitely air, so i blew through the hose again, nothing of note...
I popped the end of my air blower into the cam cover breather outlet and gave it a little blow and then did the same in the plenum... POP... engine calms down and all of a sudden no smoke.
something had blocked the breather inlet on the plenum, i had blown it out and now the vid above is how the engine is running...
Needless to say i am a tad happy!
I have no idea what was in the hole but i imagine gunk from the breather last time i blew it out... i assume it was some kind of back pressure in the head that was causing it to smoke... but i am not sure on the mechanics of it.. oh and finely given this was a new engine i have no idea what kind of wear damage it may have caused but for now its a big relief!
So lesson learn't... the importance of the cam breather!
I have some clear tube that i might put on to see how much oil is "escaping" but fingers crossed thats the problem solved...

Briliant, that's much better.
I'd be tempted to run an oil catch can, though you don't have to of course.

Just because it makes me happy to see the car moving here is a vid of me taking it for a spin...... Pre finding the blocked breather!

Re: Mk1b restoration... its alive..and painted!!
well i tried and tried and tried to set the timing yesterday... after having the distributor out more times than i care to say i finally decided to call Paul for some advice..
As expected he pointed me in the right direction, by fully rotating the distributor to the passenger side i could only manage to get to within 30 degrees of TDC timing... So the conclusion was the TPS was not set right.
This fitted with the fact i was getting 11 flashes on the Dash.
Well after testing the TPS with the gauge and checking for resistance with the meter i made some small adjustments and re installed.
The dash light no longer flashed (just 1 flash for ok)
but now the car will not start... it cranks but won't catch, it did catch a couple of times but it sounded like it might have only been on one cylinder and died pretty quickly
I have pulled the plugs and cleaned them, brand new plugs were covered in black soot, and cleaned the contacts in the distributor.
Going to go over everything again today but it has really put me in a bad mood as it was running prety well and now nothing....
Re: Mk1b restoration... its alive..and painted!!
I found that when mine would turn over but not catch the battery didn't have enough juice! Dropped it on charge and then next day wham no bother!

it could be that... i have been turning it over alot without any battery charging.
poor ignition would also tie into the state of the plugs...
i'm going to need a booster/charger anyway so i might go and get one and see if that cures it.

No worries but thanks for the update!
As you can see, i'm consumed by engine woes at the moment so no rush on my part.
As and when you can
cheers
