[Mk2] [Turbo] GT4 engine in 1990 MR2,good or bad

Post by Phill P »

Firstly apologies if this is in the wrong section :?

OK here we go, I'm possibly looking at a MR2 turbo next week, however its advertised as having a GT4 engine in it.

Now is this a good thing or could it be a nightmare,I've asked him what the donor car but he has yet to get back to me.

For it to be better than a normal turbo of 1990 spec what elso would it need,ie fueling, intercoolers, extra.

And what sort of power would be expected, and can the gearbox take it.

I've done a small search and I understand the turbo and intercooler are different, however I'm unsure if it would all work better than the normal turbo.

Cheers P :D

Hi, GT4's and MR2 turbos use the same engine (3SGTE)
My understanding is.

Celica GT4 ST165 = REV1 MR2 turbo
Celica GT4 ST185 = REV 2 MR2 Turbo
CELICA GT4 ST205 = REV 3+ MR2 Turbo

You shouldn't have any problems with it (other than the usual!) so dont let it put you off.
If you can't see the angle, you're in trouble.

No worries Phil

A lot of Mr2 Turbo owners/GT4 members interchange engines when they blow up, but also tuning parts etc..

The basic engine block is exactly the same with a few differences here and there eg GT4 has the alternator in a different position

I've previously sold a REV2 Mr2 turbo engine to a guy with a Celica GT4.. it was a case of taking the ancilleries (sp!) off the GT4 engine and putting them onto the MR2 engine.

Yea I've a 1995 ST205 and as far as I know the rev 3 engine is near enough the same as the equivalent year SW20 3SGTE apart from the afforementioned differences. I would have thought the wiring loom might be slightly different -for me I would look to see that everything's connected properly and tidily otherwise I couldn't really see a problem.

I know the alternator is in a different position on ST202 celica 3SGE BEAMS engines as well. The guys who swap the celica engine's into the MR2 and vice versa frequently leave them as they are on the donor engines and don't seem to have have any problems.

...I never realised the rev 1 and 2 3SGTE were different though?

I think it's something like this:

Celica GT4 ST165 = Gen 1 3sgte
Celica GT4 ST185 = REV1 & 2 MR2 Turbo = Gen2 3sgte
CELICA GT4 ST205 = REV 3+ MR2 Turbo = Gen3 3sgte
I asked God for a bike, but I know God doesn't work that way. So I stole a bike and asked for forgiveness.
