Pictures of oil from headgasket gone, opinions please

Post by jonb- »

Hey,

As some of you may know i'm in the process of buying a mr2 with a failed head gasket. I just had some further checks around the engine to check everything before attempting to start.

This isn't new oil, it's been in about 5k, but the cars been standing for 5 months with a dead headgasket.

The marks on the left are from wiping the dipstick.
The marks on the right are from wiping my finger in the oil filler and wiping on tissue.

Please, your opinions would be great. I really don't want to walk away from the car as she could be a nice project, i'm just wondering what the cylinder may look like.

My next plan of action is to change the oil and see if it runs as it doesn't look that awful and it's not run with that much crap in.

thanks

it looks normal to me. good colour oil.....although I'd have to see it for real before it soaked into some kitchen towel.
not all people clean around the filler cap so the oil might be a bit grundgy around that anyway.
did you check the filler cap for any signs of emaciated oil....mayonaisse looking stuff......check the coolant level in the expansion tank and where you fill up the coolant.....ie the coolant cap.

Looking at the photo again it doesn't do it justice. The oil on the dipstick looked like mayo mixed with real oil, not a pretty picture.

I'll drain some out and see what happens, there's plenty of liquid in there though.
