[Mk2] [Turbo] HKS or JUN Camshafts

Post by sutton »

As some of you may know my Rev 3 Turbo is being rebuilt. Just wondering if anyone has used the JUN Camshafts, just wondering how they compare to the HKS equivalent.

Jun parts are made by cosworth in the uk iirc..

It all depends what spec of cams you want/need? :-k

Or just go Pipers. Think they're slightly more aggresive too or have a higher lift or somethin.

Dont forget turbocharged cars like a lot of valve lift, so the more valve lift the better....

But i cant remember the exact value, but once you go over a certain amount of valve lift you need to "notch" the pistons or they will touch.

So the pipers may be worth while looking at if they have slightly more valve lift

Judging on HKS, JUN and Toda, Toda have more lift and are half the price, you can get 264 in either8.5mm, 9.0mm or 10.3 mm lift. and the same with 272 as im going for a degreed setup where JUNs highest is 9.3 and HKS 9.2mm. would it be worth going for the Toda's?

Be interested to know what the valve lift is that needs the pistons to be machined for extra clearence.

I've got stupid lift on mine so I'm pretty convinced I've lost the non-interference aspects of the engine. Best hope the cam belt holds  :D

Stock pistons and all (as far as I know) pistons for the MR2 have cut outs in the crowns for clearence in the event of a cam belt snapping, making them non-interference. So at max valve lift and TDC they wont come into contact. However, if you start adding a few mm to the valve lift they'll be getting closer, or potentially come into contact.

So my question was one of wanting to know what the max valve lift is that you can have before the pistons will come into contact with the valve at max lift/TDC. - Appologies if its not too clear, I've had a few.

if its lift your after go for the hks high lifts

11.2mm lift but beware they only fit a rev3 head as on a rev 1 and 2 the lobes catch in the head.

Toda are going really cheap on RHD mate, so think i'll go with them. It's Rev 3 so 10.3mm lift will be good? Cheers for the reply mate :thumleft:

you can put rev 3 in a rev 2 all you need to do is machine the head. I put them in mine with a bit of machine work and all is good . . . Have a word with piper im sure they will help you

Yeah rev2's defo need the head machined. I got some 11.25mm custom specs, just shy of the hks 272 duration. Idled as smooth as stock. Lumpy idle is bad tuning if you ask me.
