How on earth can they tell? The solder appears to be more in place than normal? They've no way of proving it at all, so it's definitely worth a shot if you don't fancy a new one (not that I ever did mind, when my first one started stuttering I went out and bought an Elite instead).

Dont worry mate, just phone: 0800 587 1102 print off the returns label that comes via email, take off your HD, pakage it up, send it off free of charge and wait for your new one.

Go buy an Elite in the mean time, sell your new one when it comes back....thats what I did.

The reason they know is when they take it apart, the solder will have run from many joints. The amount of heat generated by an xbox anyway is 80 - 90 degrees in certain places. Wrapa towel round it and it gets hot enough to melt solder. Tis up to you really but they know...especially as it has been splashed across thousands of forums as a "fix" for the red ring.
Just send it off and they'll fix it in a month for free.

I guess it depends on who fixes it the other end then, as you've obviously had different experiences from my friends who have sent theirs off post-towel. I still reckon the best way round it is to simply buy another one if you can, I've heard about so many RRODing shortly after they've been returned.

Shame it's such a good console really, else it'd be a case of just chuck it in the bin and get something else!
