Polo GTi

Post by The TVIS Kid »

Thought i would give a mk1 story as you don't read many on here.

Had a little traffic light GP with one of these off a roundabout and onto a duel carriage way. Didn't get the best of starts as was following behind as wasn't sure if he was going to floor it, so ended up with one of those foot to the floor at 1K rpm pull aways ( you know the ones that seem to take an age to get to the power band). Once we were round a bend from 2nd gear the distance just stayed the same to the end of third. We then went seperate ways.

I felt a bit bad on my way home as i thought they were only a 1.4 and i should have been quicker but had a quick look on parkers and they are a 1.6 with 125bhp so was quite happy that my 22 yr old car could keep up with something that VW only designed in 2000.

The Mk1 would cain his OLOP round a proper circuit...at least you have a proper handling sports car rather than a yummy mummy shopping box!

Don't underestimate how far the game has moved on in the last 20 years. Might be a lot closer than you think.

So by your own admission you are admitting that the Polo is probably quicker.

I had one from new back in 2000 (back when I had money, haha). Good little cars in a 'modern' way, ie not fun to drive but very competent. I still like the looks today, and the interior puts any Toyota to shame.

Probably about even stevens power-to-weight, though the 4A revs to the limit a lot cleaner, no doubt due to no cat etc.

Actually, I think I'd take the Polo for looks.

I'd take the MK1 MR2 for driving experience, but to a lot of people they're fugly.

You obviously didnt read it properly Lauren.
I said I would pick the Polo for looks but the MR2 for driving!

All that means is I think the Polo is a better looking car.
