[Mk2] [Turbo] Done compression test! results

Post by kev_mr2 »

Cyl 1- 165, Cyl 2-165, Cyl 3-153, Cyl 4-163

what is the normal pressure of the cylinders?

Reason i done this as i am suspecting my headgasket is leaking and causing gases to go in my cooling system and make it boil over.

There is quite a drop in cylinder 3. would i be right in thinking this is where my gasket is leaking or is there anything else it could be?

Really hope it is my headgasket and not a cracked block or that!

thanks

try a wet test in the down cylinder to see if it seals the rings, if it does thats an indication of the condition of the cylinder.

are you getting any excess blow by?

i would also get a sniffer test on your coolant to look for presence of exhaust gas.

cheers karam

surely a compression test tellls you sweet FA about your HG.....

i would have thought the only thing to give you can indication would be a leak down test....
but it alot easier to just get a sniffer test done....

hovering some kind of probe over the rad cap area, (with the cap off), and it "smells" for exhausts gases.....
quite common if the HG has gone and its overheating, that the coolent will bubble from the cap (mine did), and when these bubbles pop, they obviously pop and release the air which would be exhaust gas air.....tho i believe it can just smell traces of exhaust gases in the coolent without bubbles....

something like that anyway....

tho i think theres other ways the HG can fail and you wont overheat, not sure on that one tho..

Using a gas probe to check for exhaust gas escaping through the coolant filler. I recently failed this test. :(

edit: sorry Jim you beat me to it!

but if one of the cylinders is leaking into the cooling system it will not be holding the same pressure as the other 3 surely?

sniffer test is next tho!

how do you carry out a leak down or wet cylinder test? garage job?

cheers

sniffer test, is a test where you coolant is mixed with another liquid in a big pippet if it changes colour the H/G gasket is knackered.

Never heard of a prob that sniffs gases above header tank before :-s lol

For the wet test, just put a couple of squirts of oil into the cylinder with low readings and do a compression test again. See if the readings are higher, if so it's likely to be rings at fault. The leak down will be a garage job unless you have a compressor.
