Hey guys, everyone list there cheap/DIY mods they've done to there car!

yesterday I chopped the aircon belt, and unplugged the engine bay temp moniter to run the intercooler fan all the time

why did you chop the aircon belt as long as its not switched on it wont be affecting the performance surely just rotating the pulley until the solenoid engages the drive for the pump?

Unplugging the bay temp switch is a good idea but why not just run a switch off it in parralel to keep the auto function and so you can manually run it at your own convenience too

Chopped the belt to reduce engine drag! as the aircon is busted anyway i also removed the front air con radiator.

Too much fookin about with switches etc. mate, it runs best just on all the time, dont need to remember to turn it on or off then!

Also another mod ive done is fitted an oil seperator on the pipe from rocker cover to air intake!

What mods can you add mate?

Only things i have done is

Borrowed a Load of polishing stuff from work and have polished most of my engine just costing time.

Auto folding mirrors so they fold when i arm my alarm and open when i disarm.

Why not just take the air con pump out cos of the extra weight.

I have rigged up the fans on the front of the car to run all the time.

Lazy eye convertion can be done for about £1.

If you don't use the standard stereo rip all the old amps out.

The fan on the intercooler is only there to cool the car in traffic, at speed with it turned on it will act like restriction to the flow of incoming air. This is why it doesn’t run all the time as standard.

Lazy eye mod is free, Just put them in service mode on the way back down, can still use sidelights too.

Looks master bates if you ask me though

hmm, I don't want to turn this into a thread slating free mods, but front fans on constantly might be disingenous also.

they'll consume electricity, which is ultimately generated in a car by burning petrol. if they don't need to be on, then why put the extra drain on the alternator?

toyota seem to have done a good job at designing a cooling system that keeps the coolant at optimum temperature.

here's a cheap mod: quad stop/tail lamps. a few quid for dual filamant bulb holders, plus resistors and some wire/soldering. loads of posts on this.

how about - isolate aerial mast control? £1 switch from maplin, will stop aeiral rising if you're just listening to cds.

I also have done the mod to disable the headlight maintenance feature, which stops head lights remaining popped up if you flash the main beams when driving with side lights.

Gutting the cat must be a good performance one if you're turbo is pre 1995. Just the hassle of exhaust removal, so some instant gasket from halfords for £5.

have to say one more: check tyre pressures, oil level, coolant level, air filters and for error codes are all free, but probably a bit boring

Rig up a Intercooler Water Spray.

One old washer bottle from any car in the scrap yard.
1 meter of nylon washer tubing.
One spray nozzle from a B&Q plant water sprayer water bottle.

Rig the washer bottle up in the boot, earth the pump , run a live to the engine bay fuse box and the other to a cabin switch.

Run nylon pipe from boot to above the IC and in front of it, attach the nozzle from the B&Q thing, make sure the washer bottle is placed lower than that of the nozzle , then hit the cabin switch button and you now have a IC water spray for summer to cool the IC on the move or in traffic.

You could get a couple spray cans (obviously not free but cheap mod) and colour code a few things under the bonnet, clean up everything, paint the middle of the space saver wheel same as body, maybe take some of the dash plastics out and colour match to the exterior.. De-grill the rear bumper is one quite a few seem to do which will cost you nothin... Smoke the rear lights out..

Easy you just need to add a 3 point rocker switch on the light cable
