[Mk2] [Turbo] Removing Crank Pulley

Post by SySanguinary »

My cambelt snapped the other week so now is the time to fix it.
I couldn't get to the nut on the crank pulley with the car on the ground so I jacked it onto axle stands. Now I can get a socket onto the nut but cannot hold the pulley still whilst trying to undo it.
I've tried with the car in gear and a foot (hard) on the brake but I'm still just turning the crank (with alot of effort though!).

Any sure fast way to remove it with a basic home mechanic tool kit.

(Without placing a screwdriver in the flywheel :) )

Thanks in advance... :thumleft:

put the socket on a breaker bar. make sure it sits flat on the nut and put the other end of the bar against the driveshaft and blip the key in the ignition like youre trying to start the car. but just click it or the car will start and you could well damage something. it will take 2 or 3 trys but i done it this way and it worked really well.

Failing all that stick the car in gear and put the handbrake on then give it a good pull, use a pole to get extra leverage if you have to

hope this helps :D

Remove the lower end plate to the bell housing so it exposes the flywheel. This is gonna be your best bet if the engine is still in the car.

Unless you can get something like this....

yep best bet is to lock the flywheel, its very easy and you can ususly use a screw driver in the teeth to lock it.

cheers karam
