All you need to know about… Racing Toyota MR2’s in 2008

Post by WillJohnson »

I hope the following will be useful to anyone who wants to know what racing is available to you if you have one of these stunning race cars. 8)

For various reasons which have been discussed to death elsewhere ](*,) , there is some confusion to both existing and potential new entrants about what is on offer to the club racer with any of the Toyota MR2 models – in Production-spec or Modified. Most series regulations are nearly identical but please check the relevant websites.

As of 2008, there are 2 race series specifically for Production spec MR2’s and a further 2 where they will be very welcome. Whatever model or type of MR2 race car, you will have plenty of opportunities to race – in one or more series! 8)

The Red Dragon Race and Track Club (MSA Affiliated) runs the MR2 Racing series. This is a race series exclusively for Production-spec 1600cc Toyota MR2 Mk1 cars (min weight 1050kg).

The 750 Motor Club (MSA Affiliated) run the 750MC MR2 Championship. This series is open to Production-spec MKI, MK2 and MK3 cars. Note that Mk1’s run at a lighter minimum weight of 1000kg in this series.
Please note: This is the only series in this article which is registered with the MSA as an official points-scoring Championship.Website: www.mr2championship.com

Although not specifically for MR2’s, the following series offer even
more opportunities to race against other marques:

The Nippon Challenge for Japanese Performance Cars is also run by the Red Dragon Race and Track Club and has a class for Production and Modified Toyotas. RDRTC welcomes and actively encourages entries from the MR2 Racing series and the 750MC MR2 Championship. You can also race your MR2 Supercharger/Turbo or modified MR2 here.

Finally, I should mention the Classic and Sports Car Club’s Future Classics series. If your MR2 Mk1 or Mk2 is built to MR2 Racing or MR2 Championship spec, it will also be welcome here.

…. and if all that’s not enough, MR2 Championship and MR2 Racing Series MR2’s will again be providing a major share of the race action in the 2008 Power Nights series!
Website: www.powernights.com.

This was submitted by John Wilson who will be racing his Mk2 MR2 in the Nippon Challenge, PowerNights and 750MC MR2 Championship series.

Best advice I can give is, ignore the politics and race one on these things - at least once in your life! 8)

Cheers JOHN MR2 Mk2 #7 and also #17

You also need to add that the MR2 racing is not an MSA affiliated championship, they are just one off races (ie no points table)
