[Mk2] [Turbo] Insuring a GT-S with Elephant

Post by Steve-O 2007 »

Has anyone here insured a GT-S Turbo with Elephant??

I went to get a quote for switching my insurance over and they said they dont have GT-S on the System and cant insure it (why do they use these foreign call centres)!!

Anyway, I had a look on the Elephant site and the Selection that there system seems to have is -

Im guessing it goes under Turbo (Import) ????

GT-S is the Standard version isnt it and GT is the one with more toys in it like climate control etc isnt it?

Thanks

sounds about right, i used them before with no problems but i have the gt :-k

the only thing is that in the event of an accident they will only put the car back to standard ie. if your 17" wheels get wrecked then they will only buy you standard wheels back...i didn't like them because as soon as i signed on the dotted line they didn't give a dam...before the guy said it would be 12.50 to add a mod(admin fee) but when i did they charged me £30...i will never be using them again :eye:

Yea, think I just got someone on the phone that doesnt realy know about cars :P... Surely both GT Turbo and GTS Turbo will go under "Turbo (import)" as theres no selection for GT Turbo either (just GT TBar Turbo).

So even if you declaire having Non Standard wheels and paying them extra for having non standard wheels they will just replace them with standard wheels??

Going to switch insurance companies once the policy runs out anyway. Think I might just get a switch over quote and if they want too much will leave the MR2 around the back of the house and continue using my current car untill the policy runs out at end of Feb (and when Im 21) and go with someone like Sky who know about MR2's :)

Going to phone at 4pm tomorrow when I get home, hopefully I will get someone from the UK

my advice is dont have a crash.........has they will find a way to wriggle out of paying.
they have teams of underwriters.....doing just that to find ways of not paying out....thats why they seem preety cheap at first.....just my exprience that i had with them..

My advice is to go elsewhere for insurance - there are other insurance companies that will probably beat elephants premium anyways.

Try A-Plan, Sky Insurance (Affiliate on here) or who im going will Chris Knott group - beat all premiums.

My policy runs out on Feb 26th so not that long to go. Might be worth just keeping the MR2 around the back of the house for now then and use the Merc untill the policy runs out just incase something happens and then go with another company but I think it should be fine putting it down as a Turbo (import) as like mike said thats what it technically is.

Wasn't planning on staying with Elephant anyway, just cant wait to get out in the MR2 and was trying to work out how to get the car home (might have to get my dad to drive it back as his policy says "Can drive any other vehical as long as you have the owners permission" ). Theres no point in cancelling the insurance and losing 1 years no claims to switch companies. Plus this 1 years no claims bonus and being 21 when I come to insure the MR2 seem to make a very big difference :).

Just a point to note: You can drive any other vehicle with the owner's permission /as long as it is insured/. If you get stopped and it's not insured... you may, depending on how bad a day the policeman is having, end up with a few problems.

Best thing is, if you have an existing policy, to see if they will do a temporary additional vehicle. Direct Line are very good with this; call them up, give details, get charged a pretty-much pro-rata rate, can do up to 3 months in a year IIRC. I had to cover a Volvo 850 for a couple of weeks - cost £14 (and inherited fully comp cover from my policy). Your insurer may be different.

If you have two cars and are over 25 or 30 (forget which), try Performance Direct as well as the other specialists - they covered our import MX5 as a classic car, which means it essentially has full discounts (doesn't earn any, doesn't use any existing one) and is on a limited mileage policy with agreed value. There may be a specialist around these forums who also seems to know a bit about these things ;)

ok ive had enough.. I cant wait till my policy runs out... Phoned them yesterday they said they cant insure it because its a GT-S, Phoned them today and they asked what cc it was and I said 1990cc (as thats what I thought they were) and they said we cannot insure it as its not down here as 1990cc, its down as 1998cc (I was 8cc out!!)!!! Phoned again and got them to accept the car details and got to the mods first few went fine then I said "its had an uprated intercooler fitted" then I was put on hold for about 6 minutes while they tried to work out what the intercooler would go under!!! In the end they said they had no idea what the intercooler was and that I had to email / fax them with details... I cant be ar$ed any more with them, the MR2 will just have to sit for a month untill I can switch insurance companies...

I hope Sky insurance know what a intercooler is :D (Im sure they do ;) )

LOL! Of course we know what an intercooler is, the trouble is a standard insurer (no names I'll get into trouble) may not... also, the lady in the Indian call centre wont either...
You will get a heavy load on your premium for any mods and it may take you a while to explain the mod.. even if it is something simple.
And as for claiming... after an experience my other half had last year, I will never touch a budget insurer ever again!
