Post by jonny823 »

time has come and ive lost all interest now
so it has to go to make way for new family car (boring)
well brought the car cheap as the hose from hell had split on it
so sorted all that so thats 1 less thing to worry about
new manifold gasket was done at the same time
along with new decat pipe
was running fine till i put the new xs intercooler on it then in gettin a bad over boost problem at 3000rpm in every gear
so it mite just be a pipe no fully tightened but as i say ive just lost interest now and am poor after xmas as we all are
well the spec of the car is

1991 h-plate
9 months mot no tax as on sorn

tien ha coilovers with edfc
xs-power decat pipe
xs-power intercooler
hks dump valve
hks turbo timer
apexi air filter
boost gauge
powerflow twin 5" has a touch of surface rust i hav got most of this off

half leather seats in very good condition with no rips and minor wear
there is a blitz boost controller but there is no solinoid
17" alloys i had a brain wave one day and was gonna spray them white
but sprayed 2 of them and didnt like the shade of white i brought
but have had a price on powdercoating the rims @ £100 for all 4
ive had the cambelt done and its also had a new water pump at the same time
its also had a new speedo cable as speedo is not working but its not the cable its the drive on the gear box but i have been trying to find one
anyway if i think of anything else ill add it later
the rev3 lights have been sold it now has the rev1 rears back on now
am looking for £1200

You've got a bleed-valve on there, and a dump-to-atmosphere valve.

The stock rev1 with decat, intercooler, exhaust and filter will overboost in this configuration. The dump-to-atmos valve is not recommended as it will over-fuel the car due to "measured" air in the system being vented away to atmosphere during gearchanges or when you come off the throttle.

This is a lovely car, and could be even better with the stock (or a.n.other recirc valve) refitted, and the turbo moved to stage1 or a CT20b fitted with a 12psi actuator.

Oh, nice motor and FREE BUMP!

:thumleft:

EDIT: The other thing that causes over-boost problems is the after market de-cat pipe stopping the waste-gate opening properly. Basically you remove the de-cat pipe and go at it with an angle grinder to free up that area and allow the waste-gate to work.

As for split pipes, there is one going from the turbo to 1 inlet on the actuator, this should be split-free and tightly attached. The other one goes off from the actuator onto a hard pipe which is taken under the inlet manifold to the T-VSV. This then outlets to the intake pipe after the filter and before the compressor housing. These pipes should all be checked/replaced etc.

Hope that helps, I don't like seeing people 'fed-up' with their  cars

The EDFC system is not compatible with Tein HA coilovers, which means you must have either Superstreet with uppermount, Flex or MonoFlex installed. Depending on which it is, the suspension alone could be worth the asking price of the car.

Good luck with the sale!

Intercooler pipework will *NOT* cause a high PSI boost figure to register on a gauge.

Only the cars self-control mechanism being faulty can do this.

If your intercooler pipework is loose, the turbo will over-spool (in terms of RPM) until it generates the SAME PSI it was supposed to in the first place.

The only way to overboost is leaking vacuum pipes around the actuator, a sticking wastegate or insufficient back-pressure causing 'creep'.

actual *overboosting* which is where more PSI than is intended reached the actual inlet manifold is extremely easy to fix. It can only POSSIBLY be a number of very simple things.

I mean, if you were to buy a NEW actuator (£95) some piping (£10) and angle grind the decat pipe to fit properly (turbo gaskets, studs and nuts £25) the MAXIMUM it could possibly cost to cure is £130.

It's very easy to get confused with boost pressure, signal pressure, pressure drops, cold/hot side of the compressor, metered and unmetered air volume... just use this board for feedback and work slowly and logically through your problem.

Once the car is sorted you can make an informed decision as to whether to sell or not, and then if you do, the car will be more attractive to buyers with zero problems!
