[Mk2] [Turbo] Help with Gear box!

Post by saj8162 »

i Just recently purchased a revision 1 tubby, problem is, whn i excelerate in 1st gear then go to change to 2nd, its crunching to go into 2nd, the rest of the gears are fine, oh an whn it goes into 5th makes a slight crunch! if im driving it slowly, and chnge gear its fine, does tht mean its the gearbox gone?

or wud it be just the linkages or sumthing, not very good with mechanical side of things, am just worried, dnt wana be spending more money!

Any idears wht it could be ?

No idea mate at the moment as im new to MR2's myself, but trust me on what I say as it is usually the case with any gearbox with these sort of symptoms. (been there a few times with this).
Im not sure what a good second hand box for the MR2 goes for?

i have the exact same problem on mine when going for second. its the synchro. appparently it is a common thing to happen to rev1s. i plan to buy a re con-ed box and when i get fed up of the crunching i ll get it changed. been qouted £170 for a reconditioned box. not too bad

i would do the following:

1. change oil see if helps
2. check clutch
3. if oil doesnt help and clutch is in mint condition then yeh its the synchromesh by the sounds of it.

i recently bough a recon gear box for £195 came off car that supposed to have done < 33k anyways but was cleaned and any parts replaced before sent to me, cost £200 to fit at my local garage and im very very happy with it.

i got qoutes from breakers for replacement boxes half dozen got back to me and i got qoutes from £150-£450.

dunno if that helps.

Simillar thing here, mine does not like 3rd, I have to let the revs drop before it will go in but it has never crunched.

also try tightening the clutch from behind the pedal. More movement on the clutch might get rid of crunchs.
