[Mk2] [NA] NA with Induction Kit & Mongoose, what engine mod next

Post by neil_ross »

Hi All!

This is just a hyperthetical question, if you had a late MK2 with a mongoose and induction kit, plus £1k to spend on the engine what would you do?

Im not gonna be doing it but i was just wondering what a thousand pounds would get you!

a turbo engine and box or a v6 to put in it. then again save up sell the car and buy a tubby, not much to make n/a's go quicker really mine suits me though i love it, v6 would be nice ive had a few v6's in my time i love the pull in every gear and i bet is more reliable than the tubby and goes like stink :thumleft: :thumleft:

Due to the engine being normally aspirated power and torque rises will never be huge when you do the mods.....

You could go for a dastek unichip or a superchip. This will gain you maybe another 10-12% power.......

Then you could look at uprating the cams and having a port and polish.....

For 1k i don't think you will get near 200bhp......Maybe up into high 180's or 190... :thumleft:

Save up £2000 and get a turbo engine installed :thumleft:

/\ Can you get all that for £1k?

I'll start with improving the basics. i.e intake and exhaust side, i'd probably get an exhaust manifold (could get a xs power for about £150), de-cat, larger throttle body, boost valve, get it remapped and with the left over see if i could get a improved inlet manifold. All these can be done by yourself to save £'s.

its an NA so i think a boost valve would be a bit of a waste! lol

xs power manifold for £150?? where?! What would an improved inlet manifold entail?

Think you would get alot more out of that 1k spending it on the suspension, some nice springs/shocks, bushes, antiroll bars etc and get it set up properly. That would make your car a hell of alot quicker than any engine mods on the N/A.

My mate fitted a boost valve to his N/A crx. I think thats what it's called and it doesn't have to be turbo. It increases the pressure in the fuel system and so improves throttle respose. At high revs or high loads the fuel pressure drops thus this boost valve?/regulator helps and replenishes the pressure quicker.

As for manifold for £150. See link below \/

tbh, not sure if this is correct as i don't know too much about N/A mr2s

mrfil13 - How would that make it quicker :-k Handle betterand go round bends you mean?

The car would be quicker overall on track, corners etc.

Scotish_mr2 over on the mr2oc spent an age looking at performance mods for the N/A and if you look on there you might find it, the best price/performance mod after the induction/exhuast and decat was a fujitso (if thats how its spelt) manifold at near £700 and that gave him something like a huge 10bhp. The N/A without big money is tuned very well.

That 700 quid on suspension would get you a better handling car especially with these cars cracking on abit with worn suspension.
