Greetings from Ireland

Post by Tiger Tim »

Hi All,

Greetings from Kerry in South West Ireland. I have been looking for an MR2 for a while & have bought one in the past month. It's a 1985 MK1A on a C plate. Car was originally in Essex but came across the Irish sea about 6 months ago. Its in pretty good condition. It must have had some work in the past as the front arches & rear arch at driver's side are perfect but the rear arch at the passenger side ain't too good. Also some rust towards the bottom of the A-pillar ar driver's side but no sign of rust at other A-pillar. Needs new front shocks & droplinks plus probably many other bits I havent come across yet. I have a few questions which someone may be able to help me with.

1. The rubber seal around the rear vent at driver's side is only partly there. Do I look for a second hand one or is ther anything else I can use which looks the same.
2. Where is the ECU located - just curious.
3. I have got a new distributor cap from Toyota as the old one doesn't seat properly. They didn't have the seal for it & its on order for about 3 weeks. If I fit the new distributor without the rubber seal will it be too low & the rotor arm catch the cap.

4. Who does a bushing kit for the MR2. I know Superflex in the UK do them for Escorts but not sure about MR2. Any good suppliers in the USA. Could get stuff posted to my brother-in-law in NY & get him to send them on.

Thanks in advance,

Tim

1. look for a second hand one
2. Where is the ECU located - in the boot behind the vertical carpet against the engine bay.
3. You can buy o-ring tube and cut to size / glue as a hoop.

Hello Tim, and welcome. Try my best to answer your Q's

1. Probably easier and cheaper just finding a seal from a car that breaking, theres plenty of them (over here at least). You could just use a bit of thin black rubber though fi your not overly concerned (I wouldnt be).

2. If you go into the boot and pull forward the panel facing you (be careful not to break any clips) its there againt the engine bay firewall.

3.Errr. dunno that one....

4. High and Tight manufacture a significantly cheaper set of bushes available in the US, in fact you can probably pick a a set for the full car for around 50 quid over there. They have had mixed reviews with regard to quality however. Superflex do bushes, but 145 quid a set from Fensport. TRD also do them but hard to get and expensive, but most likely the best....

If you can get parts sent across the pond relatively cheaply, I would do that as its mucho cheaper just now with the exchange rate, I think that applies to the Euro as well as the pound.

2. As above in the boot on the right hand side of the firewall between the boot and engine bay behind the carpet pannel.
