For sale or not for sale that is the question

Post by Spittinflames »

I would like to suggest there be a ban on putting up adverts in the for sale section where the buyer says " Gauging interest only" or when the item isnt ready for sale.

Reason being is quite a few times now i've been interested in something, pm'd the seller, they then say its not off the car till next week.... so you agree to hold out for them. In the mean time other items come up but you think, well i've got one sorted, so leave it.... then the seller either never responds to any pms again or decides not to sell.... or they end up saying i had a better offer. #-o

So come on lets keep the for sale section for items that are actually for sale.... If you want to gauge interest or find out how much an item is worth then look around or pm someone who knows what they go for.

Starting to bug me a little now

TBH mate it can be quite handy to determine whether it's worth hanging on to something or not. I posted a similar thread in the For Sale about my Bomex bumper and have now determined that it's pretty worthless

A part is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it so such posts can give you an idea of a price to sell your part for when you're ready to sell it.

Putting things up for sale when the item isn't ready is a different matter and i agree completely with your point about waiting for it then missing other items. This practice should be banned and is completely unfair on the people who are interested in buying the item.

Things should only be put up for sale once they are actually removed from the car and ready for sale. Saves a lot of hassle, arguments and time for everyone.

In additon to what has been said above i would also like to suggest that each for sale post has to have the following info..

Price
Location
Contact method
No links to off site pages with info (have to put all info in the thread)

With regards to gaging interest, I have to say that its somethign we have to really deal with.

I had to do something similar with my car as I could not sell untill i had found a replacement. I made this perfectly clear in the add and it didnt cause any issue. The chap actually agreed to wait until I had found another car before purchasing it.

All i asked for was a small deposit to secure the sale.

Its all about clarity.

I tried to suggest something similar here as it was really annoying me too...

As for the 'gauging interest' posts.... yes they are definitely an annoyance, but I'd guess they're along the lines of the reserve price on eBay... Either that or people put a price they'd like this is far too high for most buyers thus putting people off, and still wasting everyones time IYSWIM...

But selling parts that aren't ready to be sent to the buyer just isn't on IMO. When I buy something, I generally expect it shortly afterwards and don't like to be waiting and waiting - in fact I can only really forgive this when it's down to a delivery problem...

It's a tricky one agreed - the problem is this. All things for sale have to go into the for-sale forum, otherwise the general boards would be full of people selling things and cars.

Some people try to exploit the grey area around what is, and isn't for sale - e.g. how much is my car worth type posts. We have (and will continue to) move these into the 'for sale' section, so that there is no grey area. If you are selling, or are thinking of selling something and want to know how much it's worth, then it has to go into the for-sale area.

So would the simplest thing to be to have a "valuation" sub-section in "for sale" ?? i.e. How much is my vented Border bonnet worth, once they recieve the information they want and decide if it's worth selling or not then they can create a post in the for sale section :-k

I really do hate these whats it worth threads... or the ones that say offers.

I recently made an offer on an item, fair do's it was a little on the low side but one has to try.... then the guy says theres no way he will take my offer.. so i say, Tell me how much you want, seens as you turned down my offer you must know what you want.... He then replied by pm with a price he was happy with

Why not just put the price you want ](*,)

You see the problem is people are greedy, They may have a boost controller for sale... they bought it cheap for 35 quid, now they want to sell it and would be happy with there money back or a little more say £50... but the greedy side of them says " well these are £250 new so i'll see what people offer me"

All valuation threads should be banned..... End of !!

the thing that annoys me the most on the for sale thread is this "dibs" lark!
on several ocasions i have had items for sale, people putting "dibs" on them, then when i contact them they make up some rubbish that they cant afford it anymore!
plus i think when a thread has "dibs" all over it,it puts of other potential buyers!

just my opinion

agree with the dibs thing too, it's just wrong. the item is for sale, it get s bought by somebody, they now own the item. stop all this, "oh i might want it ... give me 1st dibs".

then we get the "aww you sold it to somebody with the money when i had 'dibs' on it. you're a bad person" stuff.
