This is weird... today when fitting a TRD sports thermostat I noticed it doesn't quite fit in its housing. It looks like the TRD thermostat is a bit smaller, leaving a small area inside the coolant inlet uncovered by the gasket.
Look at how the gasket of the original thermostat reaches the edges:
...and the TRD one does not:
Is it supposed to be like that? I checked the product numbers but I've got the correct part (or at least the correct packaging): 16340-SP030 (for Rev3 Turbo).

Its only 1mm difference i'm pretty sure when its fixed in place the rubber gasket will squash down making it a snug fit.
Is the other surce flat or has it got a recess for the thermostat. If its a flat surface it will squash down.

one more thing i noticed from your pic, the bgb states that the pin on the rim of the thermo should be within 5degrees of the notch on the housing.

remember your compairing a crushed gaskets against an uncrushed gasket.
I bet once its all tightened down it'll open up like someone else suggested.

Whats the diff between a standard thermostat and a TRD one?? Apart from the cost??
Is it just constantly open letting the coolant run as it pleasees??

Thanks for that! I was planning on placing the pin exactly under the notch, like I found the old one. Now I know I'll have to

SPORTS THERMOSTAT
Sports thermostat that reduces the coolant temperature of high-performance engines to maximize performance.
By reducing the valve temperature by about 10 to 15°C compared with that of a standard thermostat, the TRD sports thermostat increases coolant circulation and reduces performance bottlenecks caused by engine heat, to bring out the best in engine performance. (Maintains valve temperature of 71°C.)

Why do you keep randomly posting large red text? In another thread, everything you said made no sense at all
