Tubby vs Merc 500 SL

Post by llenrub »

Coming home from sunday work. On the roundabout at Hemel and about to merge with A41 bypass when find a black 500 SL inches from my bumper weaving side to side. "yes, lets have a little go then," me thinks.

Cars in front - I drop down to second - engine wailing like a banshee. They all pull in and I floor it.... Car snakes a little and hits rev limiter. Up to third and I am pulling away hard..... Hits rev limiter again. Up to fourth. By now over a stretch of only about 600 yards I've pulled at least 50 yards on him. Cars now in front. I see him coming up behind.... He brakes hard almost colliding with me. Must have pi$$ed him off!

He zips round in front and tries to go pass the car in front him down the inside and very nearly hits him. He then goes past flat out. I thinks, 'good opportunity to see if I can make the distance up.'

Car in front lets me by and theres about 70 yards between us. I manage to catch and pass him over the next 800 yards.

he'll never turn his nose up a an MR2 ever again!

SL 500 is 388 BHP but al little heavy.

500 had 320 according to parkers, it was the 600 v12 that had 380

is this bloke from your local boozer?

do you hit the rev limiter on purpose or can you not change gear on purpose. i have never found the nead to hit rev limiter as i find the power starts tailing off before then and anything more is jsut a waste with no more power to hand?

you seem to have allot of "run ins" with posh high power cars, i need to come up there

It has been mapped cautiously & I beleive it'll rev to 7500 rpm but has been rev limited otherwise they wouldn't honour the engine build warranty (thats what they said).

It produces power all the way

I'm no angel where the speed limit in concerned so long as the conditions/situation allow. But I can tell you that I'd never risk this kind of thing with someone who had clearly proven that he was a danger on the road! :?

I've said it before.....street racing is a measure of those who have the least regard for road safety more so than who owns the faster car and who knows how to drive it well. In other words those who are willing to take dangerous risks will most often come out on top when street racing. I would regularly be beaten by any chav in a jazzed up Nova, Saxo, Mondao etc if I was to take the bait because I'm simply not prepared to waste my fuel and risk having a smash to prove something to myself, something that I already knew #-o

Totally agree. It seems all llenrub uses a forum for is to brag about his victories.

I've had a run in with an Sl500 before, and he couldn't pull away, and he was gunning it. They're not that quick for the engine they have. They match the MR2 (albeit a tuned one) on bhp/tonne, and run a 14.5 to 15 second 1/4 mile. A tuned Rev2 could make 13.5.

An Sl55 would be a different story though.
I also had a run in with an Sl65 a short while back. Now that was embarrassing

If i remember correctly, a while back there was some post about people listing all there mods on here but not declaring them to insurance companies.

I beleive one guy said he was able to take your details and run something called a Hunter check that enables him to see your current declarations on your insurance policy, whoever you are.

If you hadn't declared all your mods he was going to get you in wheel wheel big trouble. :^o

It was hilarious at the time...he lives in another world.

By the way, i cant confirm it was this guy but i remember Hunter check post.

Is that because you didn't blip the throttle #-o

This guy also claimed to have some nice high powered cars but has never been able to give photgraphic proof.

He's not young either IIRC no offence - but at this age you'd expect a bit more responsible driving on the road, you were clearly in a built up area 8-[
