Don't really have the funds to pay a garage labour rates!! I'll get there, learn a bit about these engines along the way hopefully.

Well if you don't want to go to a specialist I'd say get your hands on a fully working second hand exhaust - borrow one if you can - and fit that and see if it makes a difference.
If not and its the same, at least you can eliminate it.
Have heard of a few problems with valves at the manifold - as you mentioned...
Change your iggy components asap though, if you've had copper plugs in there for 18 months that's not good!!

just loosen the exhaust at the bottom of the down pipe and take it for a blast.
will be hella loud but you will know if the exhaust is ya problem if it runs ok

Other very simple thing to check is that your leads are all firmly where they should be. If not you won't be running on 4 cylinders obviously.
