[Mk2] [Turbo] I'm so lucky.
Hello All,
I hope people don't take an instant dislike to me because of the following.
My loving dear old dad has just given me his 1996 MR2 Turbo , Steel Mist Grey, Half leather, TRC, and some dodgy problems .
First off when he bought the car 3 years ago on 42000 miles it had just had a recon turbo fitted by the garage, we soon found out they had fitted a rev 2 turbo to it, needless to say it wasn't running too well. I sourced a new turbo for it got it fitted my a mechanic mate and it seemed better. However after a few months it started to be reluctant to rev past 5500 rpm, i booked it into owen developments they ran it on the rollers for an hour and it only made 170hp at the fly!!!! They said it was overfuelling by a mile but couldn't find a cure in the time allowed.
For the past year he's driven it like this never hard just once a fortnight on his day off for about 30 miles.
Does any body have any pointers for the first things i should look for?
Regards
Brian

Hi Mate
Firstly hellop from IMOC
secondly...Jammy Git a free rev 4 turbo. i bet that feels very slow (N/A run that power)
Thirdly.....when you took it to owen developments, did they give you any pointers?
Do you always put optimax (v power) in? as engine could be retarding and in safe mode. Have you checked all service items? HT leads, dizzy cap? Is there any splits in the hoses or leaks?

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] I'm so lucky.
He always ran it on tesco super unleaded.
Owens checked loads of things, they had the car for a full saturday. They hooked up an external boost gague and didn't think there was a leak, they checked the voltage outputs from (correct me if i'm wrong) the lambda sensor and couldn't find a fault.
they left it with us saying next they'd like to get the exhaust manifold off to check valves. Could it be a sticky valve causing it to retard and overfuel?

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] I'm so lucky.
Did they check the timing when you were there? When were the ignition components last changed? You might want to take a look for any corrosion or wear. Have you checked the ecu for error codes?
Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] I'm so lucky.
I haven't checked for error codes. i will search on how to and get it done asap. They did check the timing but i can't remember the outcome on that i'm sure they would have altered it if it were wrong. I changed the dizzy about 18 months ago to see if that would rectify it but no go. I plan to give it a full service over the next few months, including Oils,
Filters,
Brake fluids,
Belts,
Leads,
Plugs,
Rotor arm,
Cap,
Lambda.
Have i missed anythng?

Surprised no one has mentioned checking the ECU for error codes yet. Could just be a dodgy sensor. They can play havoc with a car ya know!
Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] I'm so lucky.
right, i just checked for codes and it flashed constantly no pauses, so nothing stored.
I did happen to see a sensor that looked like the wires went to a connector next to where the lambda wires go. it's just cable tied out the way. about 2.5inches long, black, with a threaded bolt on the end with the wires. probably need pictures to help but if anyone would mind looking where their one goes on a rev 3/4.
Just to clarify the wires for it come out of a grey connector next to the connector that the lambda wires go into.
Clear as mud!!!

Sounds like A/C or something. Ideally a picture would help.
Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] I'm so lucky.
i just spoke to my old man and he says he remembers owens saying somethng about baffles in the exhaust that might be sticking. I can't find anything on here about exhaust baffles!
Is my dad more senile than he knows, or were they pulling our chain?

It's possible that if gases cannot exit clearly that the running of the car could be compromised, but sounds a bit of a guess. I've known symptoms similar to what you describe if a CAT is partially blocking the exhaust too.
In your position I'd take it to a specialist like Rogue or similar if that doesn't resolve the issue!!

A decat on a 1996 car? How does it go through the MOT? I'm assuming if it's overfuelling like mad your emissions are all over the place?

You mention the car has a decat, but check the exhaust! one of our cars last week suffered with only 3 psi boost because the exhaust gas could not get past the collapsed back box interior.
Good luck

Could the sensor i've found be a cat temperature sensor. not sure if mr2s have these?
