Baldie

Post by boosch »

I am ashamed, no matter how many excuses i can come up with in this post the fact my rear tires were completly bald is a reflection of my idiocy.

1) Having driven a rev 1 NA and lost the tail a couple of times, in this rev 2 I thought the tires were in pretty good condition - nope...the seams were showing in the middle!

2)even in the wet i was giving the car a good thrashing to get to work on time. responsive, but no sign of give.

3)wish i had a photo, drove the car up to manchester from wiltshire, and only got a flat when i set off on sunday - but holy moly, was it due.

testiment to
a) the improvements toyota have made between revisions
b) the tires them selves BFGoodrich.

couldnt find any BFGs in manchester so i am running on toyos.

A car is only as good as the tires it wears.

What with its iffy suspension set up and dodgy OEM tyre selection?
I prefer to go forwards, not backwards... through a hedge...

Vaguely on topic, I got a go in a Mk2 Rev1 around Oulton Park a couple of months ago. I was in the passenger seat and the owner almost managed to spin it along the pit straight.
There's a dip in the track just after the last bend and (I assume) the suspension compressed, both back wheels toed-out and the back end of the car was fishtailing all over the track.

We were already around the corner, onto the straight and accelerating. The car was balanced and perfectly under control until the back end started moving around.

I'd always wondered exactly how much different a r1 and r2 are and, I gotta say, I was pretty shocked at how easily it tried to go sideways.
Thing is, this isn't "skidding". The back wheels are actually steering the car into a slide as the suspension loads up.

Personally, I'm surprised nobody has come up with some way of limiting the suspension travel on a r1 so that it physically cannot compress enough to toe-out. Maybe some sort of a PU sleeve for the damper strut or something?
I guess it's been tried but I assume it must upset the balance of the car too much in a corner.

Memo to self: I MUST pay attention to the difference between the "quote" and "edit" buttons.
