had an old rev1 with similar problem but not to your extremes,turned out to be a faulty speedo con.rev 1s have a mechanical conection while rev 2s and 3s have electrical.check out japenese f.a.q. on mr2s,may help or just be an interesting read.
as for the unichip you could cut its power supply and the ecu should run off its standard map,if you still have the problem then you will know...!
