petrol cap stuck - i'm screwed

Post by Quigonjay »

had been a long sweaty day at work, was keen to to get home, pulled into a busy petrol station, had to wait 10 mins just to get to a pump then spent another 10 mins trying to get the dam cap off, so feeling rather frustrated/embarrased had to drive off pratically on empty ](*,)
anyone else had this and got any tips?
cheers

Same as on mine.

All I do now is just dont make screw it back on too tight. certainly not so it starts clicking. Just so it isn't loose.

I used to have to get out the tool kit from the frunk and start bashing at it lol.

Keep a pair of plyers in the boot :D

Happened to me the night i bought it and was waiting quite a while at a motorway service station unable to continue any futher

Eventually a friendly RAC bloke pulled in to fill up and loosened it with some plyers and advised me to keep a pair in the boot as it wasn't the first time he'd done this on an MR2

As Enis says though, When it goes back on stop just before it's about to click and you shouldn't have any probs :)

I had the same problem with my rev 3 tubby, its happened twice now, but only when im low on fuel. I had to use 2 pairs of pliers and turn them at the same time and it came undone. very anoying and not to mention it makes you look a bit of a spaz because you cant open it.

Had the same thing happen to me a few weeks back. People must have thought I was constipated going by my facial expression as I tried to un-screw the cap! #-o

Yeah I was stuck once trying to fill out. Luckily had my mate in the car. He came out with his plier like fingers which are probably also made of steel (being a mechanic) and got it straight off. Made me look like a right woos!

Same happened to me.

I actually carry a small toolkit round (smug glow) and had pliers in it which I used - nearly broke the cap though.

I recall reading it's the pressure release valve in the cap that's died.

Try a new cap from Mr T or scrap yard maybe?

Rogue's top tip:

In it's folded position, the little wedge shaped chock that Toyota supply in the tool kit will fit perfectly over the petrol cap, and will provide the leverage that you need to get the stubborn little sucker off.

\:D/

I too have been in this position in the past! #-o

Next time you have it open, bend the little spring flap out a bit and it'll open properly from then on.

it only does it because the tank is pressurised. If its possible just leave it 5-10 mins for the pressure to ballance out through the charcol canister

OR just force it like mark says. lol

How about drilling a tiny hole into the petrol cap?

Wouldn't that release the pressure? I'm assuming that unless you drive like a total and utter nut case, petrol shouldn't really spill out of the hole.

Would this work?

Its happened to me a few times, but only when I'm really low on petrol. I have to give it some major stick to open it, and then theres a rather cool hissing sound!
