300+ miles to a tank of fuel (3SGE)

Post by dan9 »

My UK mk2 N/A is quite thirsty, and even when driven gently won't return 300 miles to a tank of regular unleaded.

Can you get more than 300 miles to a tank of petrol, and if so is there anything about your car that might result in better fuel economy (choice of oil/plugs/leads/etc)?

So, what's the tank capacity of an MR2? How much is it gonna cost to fill up?

My BMW 528i has something like a 15 or 16 gallon tank. It costs me about 60 quid to juice up but, from full, it'll do between 500 and 600 miles on a tank.

I hope an MR2 only costs about £35 or so to juice up.

Around 45 quid to fill up depends on price of petrol

*EDIT*
just noticed you said 600 mile on 60 quid on a 2.8 cheez  thats 100 mile on a tenner, i could only dream of that..... i swear my old 1.8 merc only did about 80 mile on a tenner

lol i'm lucky if i get 220 to a tank. This semester doing a 40mile round trip to uni everyday has been costing me a fortune and i've not been able to work as much- boohoo!

I do about 250 miles to a tank.

And that's central London stop start with some foot action.

On motorways when I drive back to Oxford, it's much better. I drove Oxford to Lancaster and halfway back via M6 on a tank.

I run my car on BP ultimate (£1.06 per litre from an out of town filling station next to me) I get 80 miles to £10 which is just over 9 litres.
A full tank makes for about 350 miles, and I'm not scared to press the fast pedal now and then, but don't drive like a nutter!
Considering I live withing 3 miles of my work, you would expect me to be burning more fuel as it's running rich from start up, the car barely drops below 100rpm by the time I get to work. It gets at least one good run a week, usually my Mrs takes it to work about 35 miles each way mostly motorway.

I've owned a rev 2 and rev 3 N/A, and both did around 250 miles to a full tank (about 26 mpg i think).

There are lots of N/A owners (and even tubby owners!) who claim to get significantly more miles to each tank (300 or more) - I want to find out what the difference is!

The way you drive is probably the most significant factor, but even with some very very gentle driving I haven't managed to improve things much. Equally, other people claim to use their right foot quite a lot and still get good economy.

When I bought my current car I improved my economy drastically by setting the ignition timing to 10 degrees BTDC (it was about 0 degrees when I got it and ran like a dog), which is the Toyota standard setting. Perhaps it should be less advanced for 95 ron fuel? Does anyone have 3SGE manuals to confirm this? (I only have the tubby BGB)

I don't think my current spark plugs have the recommended platinum tips - could this make a difference or will copper plugs just wear out more quickly?

All suggestions and discussion welcome!
