Oil Condition Monitoring Sensor / System - Any Interest?

Post by jrleech »

Chatting to a colleague last night, we were discussing his new Audi and servicing, and he said that the car tells you when in needs servicing, based on sensors that monitor the oils condition.

Googling this morning, and hey presto, I've found a system that can be retrofitted to any car. There's a write up of how it works in a sensors magazine linked off the website, but summarising, it can determine whether the oil is good, worn, additives depleted, plus soot or water contamination.

Basically it tells you when you need to change your oil, no more changing good oil, and no more running with dead oil.... COOL 8)

I've e-mailed the company this morning, enquiring about more details and pricing for 1 off and for multiple quantities. If there's some interest, I could run a group purchase.

Link to their website is here: Click Here

That looks like a good idea to me. I wonder if the sensor would replace the temp' sensor?

Probably interested as well, if it isn't too expensive. Might even find some more people to buy it. :)

There may be 1 problem guys - is the data cable long enough for a mid engine car? It doesn't look like it. If not it will be a boot mounted display.

looks like a standard RS232 plug so max 9 wires. Could probably get away with extending it with ethernet cable (8 wires).. did that with my SAFC2 and it works fine. I'd be interested in this too if the price is right.

Good idea, but its not a dash fitting display is it ??? I mean... it doesn't fluctuate often... so I recon getting one of those would be ideal fitting either in the boot ( silly as it sounds ), in the cubby hole behind the drivers seat or even in the engine bay ! :eye:
