Hi guys,
Read it on a sale thread, do all rev 5 turbos have thicker bottom ends than the others? Is this the gen4 3sgte seen in caldinas?
Also is there any way to tell the difference between between the engines to tell if you have the thicker block?
Thanks

They are thicker blocks in the sense there is more material around the water pump area
It is not the same engine as the caldina

Sort of like the 5sfe bottom then!
Is there a way of telling if it is one of those blocks??
Any stamps or serial numbers?

From what I believe it's not just the Factory Rev 5 blocks, it's also the Rev 4's.

98 onwards.
If you want it confirming then have it ultrasound tested.
All 5s blocks have more between the cylinders.

Re: Do genuine rev5 turbos have thicker blocks?
I take it 5sfe blocks are still safer for handling lots of power compared to rev5 3sgte ones right?
Re: Do genuine rev5 turbos have thicker blocks?
rumour has it. Thing is there are many more 5s blocks than there are rev 5 turbo blocks about so its not a fair competition really. I believe rogue years ago took a series of blocks to an ultrasound place and ranked:
5s
3s > 98
3s rev 1-2
3s Rev 3
In terms of wall thickness. REv 3 was found to be very thin.
Probably hearsay and changed a lot through the years so who knows.
