so ive been tidying up the cosmetics under the bonnet sorting out the ancillaries and generally making it work.
getting the afm supported was fairly simple. i welded a bit of tube to the strut brace flattened the other end and bolted it to the body then i had another bit of tube hanging down and attached to the afm. that supports the entire intake nicely and looks like its supposed to be there.
i then painted the strut in body colour but i decided on satin lacquer, i think it suits the engine bay better.
then there was the aftermarket strut brace. it hit the intake plenum as standard so i had 3 options.
1 was to bend it up in the middle. this was inmpracticable for more than one reason.
2 was to spin it round so it was further back in the engine bay. this would work if i wanted to do away with the oem brace, or cut and re-shape it to miss the aftermarket brace. i decided against that because i didnt think id be able to make it strong enough with the 3 or 4 bends id have to add.
3 was to simply raise the brace up 10mm. this was the option i ended up going for, even though it meant it would hit the bonnett. i could deal with that later.
ahh a kants todger of clearance. i hope it will be enough.
all i had to do then was 'persuade' (ahem) the rain drip tray to move out of the way and the bonnet shuts! nice.
please note its only roughed in at the moment, ill be taking it back off soon and painting the 'feet' of the brace at a later date.

Re: welcome to my basket case.
all i need to do now in the engine bay is bleed the clutch.....
then sort out the miles of wiring i pulled through to remove the engine side of the aftermarket immobiliser....

Re: welcome to my basket case.
i errrm, have gone and aquired myself another mr2.
it was a freeby off of facebook with a knackered engine. well thatll be a good place to put my old 3s-ge then
its rather rotten, and it failed its mot in 2009 and has sat ever since....
but it was free!
watch this space, im not going to touch it until ive got my v6 on the road.

You're becoming a collector.
Re: welcome to my basket case.

Re: welcome to my basket case.
but back on the original subject...
i drove my v6 today...
however i appear to have a rather large oil leak coming from the timing belt area. im thinging a cam seal is a bit crappy. it leaves a pool after 5 mins of idling. bu88er.

Re: welcome to my basket case.
so i pulled the timing belt off and the cam pulleys off to prove to myself where the oil was coming from, i was already pretty sure but before i replaced the seal i wanted to prove it.
yup, thatll do it. i have no idea how i managed that. i was careful fitting them i can only think that it had a defect in it and the spinning camshaft ripped it apart...
pictures taken with my endoscope. its a great toy and has many uses...

and it passes, no advisorys. bonus
Re: welcome to my basket case.
How do you achieve so much in such a short space of time?!
I've procrastinated getting someone to spray my bumper for like 3 months lol.
Anyways, great work.

Re: welcome to my basket case.
cos i think to my self.. i could clean my house.. or go work on the car. guess which option usually wins?
so when the guy put the advert up, about the red mr2, he said it had a seized engine, oh no it doesnt. imagine my surprise when i put a fully charged battery on it and it turns over nicely. will change the coil and ignitor as it has no spark and then it might start...

Re: welcome to my basket case.
i wanted to know just how good the pain is under all that blooming. so quick pass with the coarse compound and mop on the bootlid and...
this is going to be a success!

Re: welcome to my basket case.
Lovely work on that boot.
Are you breaking it or saving it? I'm a little confused.

If you've got the time and skills with a welder then have at it
Re: welcome to my basket case.
ok decision made....
im going to save it.
the sills have one big hole at the rear which will require complete reconstruction, and two large holes either side on the underneath.
the floor has surface corrosion along the sills.
the rear wheel arches are totally rotten around the outside edge and the boot corners are rotten.
the hard brake pipes are all failing
the calipers need a refurb
the rear engine crossmember is covered in surface rust.
the catalytic converter is rotten but the rest of the exhaust is ok.
the suspension struts are covered in rust but are relatively low miles so will be ok with a can of stonechip.
theres no spark but i already have the fix for that on its way.
add to that itss missing its rear brake pads (have a set for it) and its missing 1 wheel nut from each wheel and we have the car i have named.....

Re: welcome to my basket case.
Wow, well good luck. looking forward to the progress on this one.
Re: welcome to my basket case.
so back to the v6. i was mildly amused by the result of the emissions.
i dont think it would be possible to pass by a bigger margin.
took it down today to have it set up on a hunter 4 wheel alignment rig.
it was miles out both front and rear but unfortunately they where unable to set the camber up on the front because it was already up on the stops. this is because i fitted the top mounts wrong. ill spin them round 90* and then they will stick it back on their machine FOC to set it up. all for £55+vat, im a happy bunny, its a transformed car.

Re: welcome to my basket case.
wow £55 plus VAT is good, it is like £80 plus VAT near me.
