Checking shifter cables for wear - popping out of 4th

Post by auzzam »

Hey guys,

Any idea on what the visual checks are for the cables, it seems since changing the gearbox oil recently its decided to pop out of 4th once every 5 shifts.

I've read this could be the cables, but can't find anywhere that mentions what I should be looking for.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

If you take the cables off their shafts at the gearbox end (simply remove clevis pin and slide off) you will see they have a rubber bush with a thin brass insert tube. This tube wears and distorts over time

These can be replaced with sealed bearings and washers to firm up the shift.

Thanks, I should have mentioned before that I changed the stock ones in November which tightened everything up, its just recently that the 4th gear pop out has got worse.

Are there any visual checks I can do on the cables themself?

The gearcables are complete sealed units and cannot be modifed there isn't really a way to check them. I would say perhaps getting a set from a breaker might be your best bet.

The other thing to mention is the square brass bush on the shifter mechanism on the gearbox. this can wear also. Just unbolt the levers turn the bush 90 degrees and refit the levers.

Thanks guys, I've recently rotated the shifter cube.

But will keep a lookout for second hand shifter cables are they the same for a turbo/na and are there any differences between the revisions?

could you not unblot them at the box end and feel for drag in the movement?

I very much doubt it's the cables causing the box to jump out of gear.

Could prove it by parking at the top of a long hill. Select 4th and then remove the cable attachment. start car with clutch down, roll down hill then lift clutch into 4th. drive the same as when 4th was jumping out. If it still jumps out then you know it's not the cables.

Reattch cables at side of road for drive home.

It is more likely the box though :?

Yeah more and more its looking like a rebuild is the only option, has anyone got rough prices for this? I suppose its better than taking a risk with a second hand box

A gearbox rebuild is about £600+
Second hand turbo box is about £350, NA boxes are MUCH cheaper.
